The Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission Office of General Counsel is seeking summer law clerks!

Hours: Full-Time, 8am to 5pm With Flexibility
Location: Austin Texas Headquarters
Pay: $17.85, Hourly
2nd Session: From 06/15/26 – 08/14/26 (with dates being flexible)

The Office of General Counsel provides legal services for the agency, including representing TABC in administrative hearings, drafting rules, responding to open records requests, managing litigation involving the agency, and providing legal advice to agency leadership and staff. The two law clerks selected for this position will gain knowledge in the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Code, legal processes, and other hands-on legal experience. These two-month clerkship positions perform routine (journey-level) clerical work for the Office of General Counsel. 


GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Performs complex (journey-level) legal research and analysis work. Work involves legal research, preparation of contested cases, processing public information requests, examining, preparing, and evaluating legal documents, and providing assistance to agency attorneys. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. 



Essential Job Functions

25% Advises agency staff on legal matters and on the interpretation and application of laws and regulations. 
25% Provides legal research and consultation to Executive Management, General Counsel and programs on legal matters, on the interpretation and application of agency regulations, and state and federal laws.
25% Prepares and organizes legal documents, briefs, correspondence, and reports. 
20% Assists with agency responses to open records requests.
5%  Assists with special projects and performs other duties as assigned.


MQs, KSA, License/Certifications

Education: 
•Currently pursuing or enrolled in an accredited law school or graduated from an accredited law school with Bachelor of Laws (LLB) or a Juris Doctor (JD) degree. 
•Completion of a minimum of 2 semesters of law school. ( PLEASE ATTACH TRANSCRIPTS TO YOUR APPLICATION. )

Must be able to pass a background check.  

Preferred Qualifications: 
•Coursework in Administrative Law
•Experience in research and case discovery.

 
Knowledge

•Knowledge of office procedures; of spelling, punctuation, grammar, and arithmetic; of business or program terminology, methods, and procedures; and of records administration and maintenance techniques and procedures.

Skills
•Skill in the use of a computer, computer programs (e.g., Microsoft Suite and Adobe Acrobat) and office equipment (e.g., printer and scanner). 
•Skill in critical thinking and problem solving with attention to detail and strong organizational skills. 

Abilities
•Ability to prepare and maintain records, files, and reports; to transfer stock from one location to another; to make arithmetic computations; and to communicate effectively.
•Ability to work as a team member.

REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE: 

•Possess a valid Texas driver’s license, if applicable.
•Must be able to present a copy of law school transcript. 


Physical Requirements/Supplemental Information

TRAVEL REQUIREMENT %: 5%

Physical Requirements: This position functions in a standard office environment. Must be able to move around the office to access filing cabinets, office equipment and move up to 20 pounds. Must be able to communicate and exchange information via phone, computer, in person and via electronic media. Must be able to perform repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation. Must be able to work with overlapping deadlines. This position is expected to work in the office full-time but may be eligible for situational telework upon supervisor approval.
