JOB SUMMARY:
The Bronx District Attorney’s Office is seeking a leader whose diverse experience reflects an ability to serve the over 1.4 million members of the Bronx County community and to pursue a safer Bronx through fair justice. The Community Justice Bureau (CJB) within the Strategic Innovations Division (SID) is seeking an experienced attorney to serve as Bureau Chief. CJB’s mission is to divert justice-involved individuals away from the criminal justice system and into social service interventions, where appropriate. Reporting to the Deputy Division Chief and Division Chief of SID, the Bureau Chief will oversee daily management of the bureau, planning, and implementation of new and innovative programs, evaluation and quality improvement of new and existing resources, partnership development, and education. The ideal candidate will be passionate about providing justice-involved individuals with a meaningful opportunity to improve their lives while ensuring public safety.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Shape the overall direction of the Community Justice Bureau, including implementation of diversion components of the DA’s Policy Statement – A Safer Bronx Through Fair Justice;
• Manage the CJB’s clinical and legal staff;
• Create unique off-ramps and oversight for justice-involved individuals seeking substance abuse, mental health, and treatment alternatives;
• Engage with research and practitioner-based partners to evaluate the impact of existing CJB initiatives, employ innovative process measures to realize program effectiveness;
• Create inventive opportunities to improve public safety (violence intervention, opioid and substance misuse prevention, mental health response);
• Carry out day to day dialogue with intra-office and community-based criminal justice stakeholders interested in alternatives to incarceration and diversion (other ADAs, judges, police departments, defense attorneys, treatment providers, etc.);
• Lead the Office’s presence on inter-agency task forces, external committees, and at meetings of national organizations;
• Develop corporate, government, and private fundraising efforts;
• Perform all other related duties and projects as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
• A Juris Doctorate degree and a minimum of 10 years in prosecution or criminal defense required.
• Experience or graduate degree in public health, public administration, policy, or mental health preferred.
• US Citizenship and New York State Residency are required as of first day of employment.
• Experience developing new diversion program initiatives including implementing performance indicators to better evaluate operations and success preferred.
• Possess an existing network/relationship with service providers who are willing to work on BXDA programming.
• Extensive knowledge of, and experience with, New York’s Penal Law and Criminal Procedure Law.
• Ability to problem-solve and think outside of the box to resolve roadblocks and challenges
• Excellent presentation skills with an ability to partner with the data science team to extrapolate and discuss outcome findings and performance metrics.
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to exercise confidentiality, good judgment, and strong ethics.
