Klaviyo is seeking a Sr. Director, Legal - Privacy to lead Klaviyo’s global privacy and data protection program and strategy. In this role, you will be a strategic partner to cross-functional teams, driving critical privacy, data and AI/ML initiatives. You’ll deliver practical, business-oriented legal solutions that enable innovation while ensuring compliance across global operations.
How you’ll make an impact:
- Lead, mentor, and manage a small privacy team, fostering a collaborative and high-performance culture
- Lead the company’s global privacy strategy, policies and procedures
- Provide legal advice and direction on matters regarding privacy, data and AI/ML
- Monitor global privacy and AI regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, AI Act) and ensure practical implementation
- Manage data governance processes including data mapping, DPIAs, model evaluations, and vendor risk assessments
- Partner with engineering, product, data and other cross-functional teams to embed privacy-by-design principles into new products, features, and processes
- Partner with the InfoSec team to manage privacy incidents and lead response efforts, including regulatory notifications and internal investigations
- Support members of the Legal team in proactively addressing privacy and data related requirements
- Interface with regulators, auditors, and customers on privacy matters
- Drive awareness, training and a strong culture of privacy across the organization
- Handle other special projects as needed
Who you are:
- Minimum 10 years of experience in privacy and data protection
- JD and membership in at least one state bar (preferably Massachusetts or California)
- Deep knowledge of privacy laws (GDPR, CCPA, etc.) with significant experience advising on a range of privacy and compliance issues, regulations and industry standards with a focus on data use and cybersecurity.
- Experience with issues systemic to data science and data use, and broader AI-related legal and compliance issues.
- Comfortable working autonomously and in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience managing and leading a team of legal professionals
- Have a practical, business-oriented approach and excellent communication skills with the ability to distill complex legal concepts into simple, actionable recommendations
- High level of integrity, professionalism, intellectual curiosity and willingness to learn
