Under the general direction of the Deputy Labor Commissioner Manager, the Incumbent plans, organizes, directs, and supervises the work of a specialized investigative unit of the Labor Commissioner’s Bureau of Field Enforcement program. The Incumbent is responsible for planning, organizing and reviewing the work of the employees supervised. This position requires exceptional skill in coordinating the activity of a statewide investigative unit and working together with internal and external stakeholders in order to effectively and productively advance the Labor Commissioner’s Office law enforcement efforts. In addition, provides and promotes outreach to educate the public and engages community stakeholders to address issues and build better enforcement awareness. The Incumbent will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to the Mission and the Vision of the Division.
This is a first full supervisory level.

Effective July 1, 2025, specific Bargaining Units and associated Excluded State employees are subject to a salary reduction between 2% - 4.62% in exchange for hours in the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) per month. The incumbent must have a lucid understanding of the California Labor Code and the Industrial Welfare Commissioner Orders as well as a sympathetic understanding of the labor problems; sound judgment; reliability; impartiality; tact; firmness; patience; neat personal appearance; professional demeanor and attire; and a willingness to travel and be able to work irregular hours. The incumbent must possess strong skills in decision making; interpersonal and leadership ability, initiative, and resourcefulness to complete tasks; conflict prevention and resolution; organizational change and time management; analytical and attention to detail; effective collaboration; researching current laws and policies; mathematical calculations; as well as proficient in Excel and other Microsoft applications. Confidentiality and discretion are required due to the nature of the documents and information handled. The incumbent will have a hybrid work environment including in-person and remote work consistent with operational needs and may work in a high-rise office building. The incumbent will be required to sit for long periods of time while in the office and/or while driving to and from field activities. Field work is required within the State when visiting assigned field offices and attending or conducting trainings. Travel may be via land or air and may require overnight stay. The incumbent will have access to a state vehicle, laptop computer, printer, cellular phone, and other equipment necessary to stay in touch with the assigned field offices and their staff. The assigned state vehicle will be parked at a departmental-designated location. Requirement to visit assigned field offices during the COVID-19 Pandemic is flexible such that these visits can be conducted via Teams with camera activated in lieu of in-person appearance. The incumbent will also traverse various ground surfaces and/or buildings while managing between 2-5 lbs of equipment (laptop or tablet, and chargers) while out in the field training field staff.
