Position Information

“Drive Investigations that Deliver Answers and Justice.”

The Department of the Medical Examiner is seeking an experienced death or forensic investigators to fill a couple of Medicolegal Investigator IV positions in Honolulu. These positions serve as a working supervisor for a team of investigative staff and related activities for an assigned shift on selected weekdays and/or weekend days, assuming responsibility for the full range of medicolegal investigative work in connection with any death that falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of the Medical Examiner.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and supervise investigators: assign work, provide coaching and training, evaluate performance, and manage scheduling.

  • Oversee casework and morgue operations, including decedent identification, next-of-kin notification, and disposition of remains.

  • Conduct and direct medicolegal death investigations in coordination with law enforcement, healthcare providers, and other agencies.

  • Ensure proper handling, security, and documentation of evidence, property, and unclaimed or unidentified decedents.

  • Prepare reports, maintain records, and provide expert testimony in court and official proceedings.

  • Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment. 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in forensic science, biological science, nursing, allied health, criminal justice, or a directly related field.

Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally-accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript.

Substitution
:  Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.  Such experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability normally gained from attainment of a bachelor's degree in forensic science, biological science, nursing, allied health, criminal justice, or a directly related field.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Three years of progressively responsible professional experience in conducting medicolegal investigations, one of which shall have been representative of the next lower level.* 

*Experience representative of the next lower level (Medicolegal Investigator III) involves independently conducting the full range of medicolegal investigations of deaths which are accidental, violent, unattended or unexplained to determine facts, develop evidence, and secure information to ascertain the medical cause and manner of death.

Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of and experience in applying:

  • Medicolegal death investigation principles and practices; 
  • Laws, rules, and regulations governing death investigations; 
  • Procedures for the identification, handling, and disposition of decedents; and
  • Proper collection, documentation, and safeguarding of evidence and personal property.
 
LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
1.  Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license (Type 3/automobile), prior to appointment.

2.  Certification by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) as a Registered Diplomate, at the time of application.
