
The Role
The Corporate Counsel position is responsible, under the guidance of Department of Legal Affairs (DLA) Leadership, for providing valued, strategic, and practical legal advice and support for Providence St. Joseph Health (“Providence”) in a wide range of diverse litigation and dispute matters, including general liability, medical malpractice (as appropriate), commercial disputes, regulatory enforcement, and internal investigations, and for specific projects as assigned.
The ideal candidate brings strong litigation skills, a collaborative mindset, and a proactive approach to risk mitigation and case strategy. This role works closely with Risk Management, Compliance, Claims, and operational leaders to protect the organization’s interests while advancing its mission of delivering high-quality, patient-centered care.
This role is hybrid and can be located in either Seattle, WA or Irvine, CA.
Essential Functions
Manage a portfolio of active litigation matters, including general liability, professional liability (as assigned), contract disputes, business torts, and regulatory enforcement.
Coordinate closely with Risk Management and insurance carriers on pre-litigation claims and insured matters.
Oversee outside counsel: approve strategy, budgets, pleadings, discovery, and resolution recommendations.
Advise internal stakeholders on litigation risk, early case assessment, and settlement strategy.
Support internal investigations and responses to subpoenas, civil investigative demands, and administrative inquiries (excluding employment-related matters).
Serve as legal liaison for complex tort claims, facility incidents, and enterprise-level disputes.
Participate in the development of system-wide litigation protocols, early warning systems, and risk mitigation initiatives.
Provide education and guidance to operational teams on litigation trends, claims processes, and documentation practices.
Maintain accurate tracking, documentation, and reporting of litigation and dispute matters.
Assume responsibility for administrative functions within DLA, as assigned.
Qualifications
Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
Active admission and license to practice law in either California or Washington.
At least 5-10 years of relevant litigation experience (law firm experience is a plus), including experience with general liability, healthcare-related claims, or commercial litigation.
Ability to manage multiple matters and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams including risk, compliance, claims, and operations.
Superior communication skills in both written and verbal presentation, including all aspects of legal writing technique and procedure, and the ability to convey complex legal concepts to non-lawyers.
Ability to function effectively and complete projects in a timely manner in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to work collaboratively with attorneys and staff within DLA and Providence.
