JOB SUMMARY
The Legal Intern is responsible for a variety of highly complex administrative and legal support duties under the direction of the City Attorney. The Legal Intern conducts legal research, drafts legal documents, facilitates correspondence, maintains detailed files, assists in maintaining claims by the City or against the City, assists in preparing and filing court pleadings, processes contracts and other legal documents, and provides specialized administrative support to the City Attorney.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Prepares and drafts ordinances, resolutions, and contracts for review by the City Attorney; provides legal research assistance to the City Attorney.
- Reviews agreements and supporting documentation for City departments.
- Receives, processes, and drafts responses to subpoenas and routine public record requests; responds to routine inquiries.
- Receives, processes, and monitors the progress of correspondence, memoranda, and other documents through the City Attorney’s Office; provides associated information to relevant parties; prepares, compiles, and produces correspondence and related reports.
- Maintains calendar of proceedings and other critical dates; arranges for video conferences and continuing education opportunities; coordinates meetings; processes mail; notarizes or arranges for documents to be notarized as requested.
- Maintains sensitive files and records; prepares and compiles detailed and complex documents with accuracy, in a timely manner and with confidentiality.
- Responsible for maintaining subscriptions and office supplies; reviews legal invoices and routes for payment.
- Builds and maintains positive working relationships with coworkers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
- Performs other duties as assigned by City Attorney.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS- Enrollment in, or recent graduation from, an ABA-accredited law school.
- Proficient in legal research software and word processing software.
- A current and valid driver’s license.
- One year of increasingly responsible experience performing support functions in a law office environment.
- Ability to maintain a current notary public.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit or stand and work on a computer. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to mobilize between offices. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in indoor conditions and regularly works near video display. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
- $17 - $22.78/hour
