Job Description

About the Team

As part of Law.com’s broader strategic intelligence business, the Law.com litigation team delivers authoritative coverage of cutting‑edge legal issues, consequential court cases and emerging litigation trends—along with the lawyers, judges and professionals driving those developments.

Our journalism functions as decision intelligence for a sophisticated business audience, helping legal leaders assess risk, spot opportunity and understand the strategic implications of litigation. We operate with a data‑ and insight‑driven mindset, connecting individual cases to broader market signals and shifts in litigation strategy.

The Philadelphia‑based reporter will join a collaborative, nationally distributed team of senior and early‑career journalists working closely with editors across major legal markets, including New York, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., Miami and Atlanta.

Shape

The Role

This is a high‑visibility assignment with national reach and real market impact. You will produce authoritative, insight‑driven coverage that surfaces early signals in court filings, rulings and litigation strategy—connecting the dots for readers who rely on our reporting as part of their professional decision‑making workflows.

You will be expected to deliver breaking news at speed, sophisticated analysis with authority and enterprise reporting that reveals what is changing in litigation—and why it matters to the business of law.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide in-depth coverage of consequential lawsuits, key filings, court decisions and court administration in Pennsylvania courts, at both the state and federal levels.
  • Court coverage shall emphasize Philadelphia Common Pleas Court (the basic trial level court), the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and (in collaboration with a national federal appeals court reporter) the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
  • Own and develop deep expertise in the national class actions and mass tort practice area, in close collaboration with a senior litigation reporter, translating developments into forward-leaning insight on risk, defense strategy, plaintiff trends and market implications.
  • Track litigation trends, producing investigative and enterprise stories involving litigators and litigation strategies in Pennsylvania.
  • Ability to leverage resources—from human intelligence and deep dives into case filing data and other statistics, to our data-driven and analytical Radar team and AI--to surface trends and shifts in the litigation landscape before others recognize them.
  • Connect local and regional reporting by looking to coverage from colleagues across Law.com’s global newsroom to identify national trend stories, cross-market inflection points and multi‑jurisdictional projects.
  • Serve a highly sophisticated audience of attorneys, judges and legal‑industry professionals who rely on Law.com for credible, highly sought‑after insight into risk, opportunity and competitive dynamics.
  • Produce breaking news on tight deadlines for local and national audiences.
  • Balance daily news reporting with enterprise, analysis and investigative work. As a baseline, reporters are expected to publish at least one story per day, with multiple analysis and enterprise pieces each week.
  • Write with clarity and authority on litigation issues, including data‑informed explainers and analysis that make complex developments more actionable for decision‑makers.
  • Build and maintain a strong network of lawyers, judges and legal strategists to generate exclusive insight, validate analysis where appropriate and deepen the credibility of coverage.
  • Collaborate effectively with reporters and editors across geographies and platforms, contributing to social media and audience engagement.
  • Use audience signals and editor feedback to sharpen coverage priorities, ensuring reporting aligns with how professionals use intelligence in practice.
  • Over time, develop a visible voice as a litigation authority across platforms and selected industry forums.

Skills Knowledge and Expertise

  • Exceptional writing skills, with the ability to produce clear, engaging and authoritative journalism on deadline.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and nurture relationships with lawyers, judges and policymakers. Willingness to meet key players on their turf.
  • Ability to identify and engage with key thought leaders in the Philadelphia legal market, as well as the national market in class action and mass tort litigation.
  • Ability to collaborate and learn from colleagues; potential and desire to become a leader, both on our desk and in the communities we cover.
  • Thrives in a fast‑paced, high‑standards environment; able to juggle breaking news, analysis and enterprise reporting simultaneously.
  • Willing and eager to attend and cover court hearings and trials in person.
  • Ability to produce one to three stories per day and at least four enterprise pieces per month.
  • A disciplined mindset with a commitment to editorial excellence and becoming an authoritative voice.
  • Strong communication, organization and time management skills; collaborative and team‑oriented.
  • Creative, curious and enthusiastic about using professional social platforms, video, interactive data and digital tools to enhance reporting and connect with readers.
  • Ideally two to three years of experience in a daily news environment; experience in legal or business journalism is a plus, though strong recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Comfort working with basic data—such as volume of filings, docket trends and case patterns—to support enterprise reporting and analysis is a plus.
  • Expected to work in the newsroom at least three days per week.
  • Must be based in the Philadelphia area.
