Thank you for your interest in being a Teaching Fellow for this year’s Legal Research 1 and Legal Research 2 (LR1 and LR2) courses! We are looking for upper-division students who can assist instructors in administering LR1 and LR2 throughout the year. This paid position would also require some preparatory work before school begins in August. Our ideal candidates are students who enjoy the legal research process, are motivated to further develop their own research skills, and are excited to work with and support 1Ls. We are looking for three Teaching Fellows this school year, one for each instructor of legal research. What does the LR Teaching Fellow do?

The LR Teaching Fellow will work closely with a LR1/2 instructor to help administer two sections of LR1 in the fall and LR2 in the spring. You will be assigned to a specific instructor (Anderson, Kite, or Kostek). Each section uses the same syllabus, weekly assignments, homework, and exams.

This school year Legal Research will be taught across both semesters for the first 7 weeks of each semester (13 classes 2/week). We do not anticipate work between week 8 and the end of finals for fall semester, but there will be some work between semesters after finals have concluded.

Main duties include:

1.  Work with their instructor. The Teaching Fellow will work closely with their LR instructor, and meet on a weekly basis to discuss upcoming assignments, student concerns, and other matters involving the course. Among other things, you will be asked (1) to test and provide feedback on proposed class work and exams before they are assigned, (2) to help create answer keys and /or model answers to aid in student review of course work, and (3) to help review and provide feedback on ungraded student homework. 

2.  Attend class. Each week of LR consists of lectures and interactive labs during which students also work independently. The Teaching Fellow may be asked to attend and assist with student questions and work during one class each week. We ask that the Teaching Fellow split this time between their instructors’ different sections throughout the semester, as equally as practicable given the Teaching Fellow’s schedule. Each instructor teaches two sections of the Legal Research, typically morning and afternoon or afternoon and evening.

3.  Administrative tasks. You may be asked to help with general course administration as needed, including tracking student attendance and coursework completion.

4.  Mentorship.  As a Teaching Fellow you will have the opportunity to mentor and support 1L students, particularly with regard to your own experiences as a 1L and your own legal research skills. This may include time in class, office hours, and during the semester generally as 1Ls approach or email you with questions. 

What is the compensation and the time commitment?

This position is paid, and you will earn $18/hour for the work.

There is a 75 hour maximum for the position. We anticipate that Teaching Fellows would each work roughly 37 hours each semester. This will include time assisting your instructor with course set-up and assignment review, and then typically around 3-4 hours per week on course responsibilities, including attending at least one class session per week. You may work with other legal research teaching fellows on group projects or testing.

What are the job qualifications?

This opportunity is open to upper-division students (including evening students who have completed LR1). The LR Teaching Fellow needs to have:

• A basic command of the legal research strategies and tools, including both Westlaw and Lexis, that are learned in LR1;

• Strong communication skills;

• The ability and willingness to work with first-year students;

• Basic fluency with Google Classroom and other classroom tech being used. We can provide any necessary training; and

• Good organization skills and an ability to respond quickly to student inquiries.
