Each of the more than 500 staff who work in the Office of the Attorney General are dedicated to serving all Delawareans with integrity and passion.

Deputy Attorneys General, with critical support from criminal special investigators, victim service specialists, paraprofessionals, and administrative staff, prosecute criminal cases, enforce consumer laws, provide counsel to state agencies, ensure the public's access to open government, protect the abused, and much more.

Summary Statement
The Delaware Department of Justice, Family Division, seeks a Deputy Attorney General to join our phenomenal team in the newly formed Criminal & Delinquency Unit and serve as Assistant Unit Head with a focus on domestic violence. 

The Deputy Attorneys General in this Unit are responsible for drafting motions and briefs, performing research, extending and negotiating plea agreements, and taking matters to trial.  This is a Unit with a high volume of cases and several court calendars scheduled per week.  Deputy Attorneys General in this Unit are responsible for prosecuting both juvenile delinquency and truancy cases. 

The primary focus of this Assistant Unit Head position will be to supervise Deputy Attorneys General and support staff working on adult criminal cases within Family Court’s jurisdiction.  The Assistant Unit Head will also be responsible for carrying a caseload and attending court.  This unique position will also offer the opportunity to cross-train with juvenile delinquency cases, which includes both felonies and misdemeanors.

As an Assistant Unit Head, this individual will carry their own caseload and also assist the Unit Head in the directing and managing of other Deputy Attorneys General, administrative and support operations within the Unit; coordination of assignments and training for all unit members, and other managerial tasks as needed.

 


 

Job Requirements
A qualified candidate should have experience prosecuting adult criminal cases; experience with domestic violence cases is preferred but not required. Strong knowledge of criminal law and procedure is essential, along with the ability to evaluate cases, determine appropriate resolutions, anticipate legal issues, and conduct accurate and effective legal research. Candidates must be able to learn and apply relevant laws and court rules and develop effective working relationships with Deputy Attorneys General, support staff, and court personnel. For this leadership role, candidates must have strong management skills and the ability to mentor and train Deputy Attorneys General.  Delaware Bar membership is required.

Conditions of Hire
  • Criminal background check: A satisfactory criminal background check is required as a condition of hire. 
  • Direct deposit of paychecks is required as a condition of hire.
  • Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • This position is part of a job classification that is represented by an exclusive bargaining representative (labor organization), as elected by employees in accordance with Title 29, Chapter 59 and Title 19, Chapters 13 and 16. While this position is now covered under a bargaining unit, a collective bargaining agreement is currently under negotiation, and terms and conditions of employment may be subject to change upon its ratification.
