Job Description

 

The State Board of Education is made up of 19 members - 11 who are elected and eight who are appointed by the governor. The chairs of the education committees of the Ohio House of Representatives and Ohio Senate serve as non-voting ex officio members. The Superintendent of Public Instruction serves as secretary of the State Board of Education. 

The Office for Professional Conduct administers the ethical standards for educators. The office investigates allegations involving criminal or ethical violations to ensure that all Ohio students receive instruction from educators committed to a safe, supportive and healthy school community. 

  • Successful completion of certification program for paralegal or legal assistant
  • Or 12 months of law school training

  • The final candidate selected for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check as well as other investigative reviews. The Paralegal/Legal Assistant 1 plays a key role at the Board. In this position, you will be responsible for:

  • Researching federal and state statutes

  • Recording judicial decisions and other legal sources or materials in order to review filings

  • Preparing responses to inquiries, complaints, claims or legal/administrative procedural issues

  • Assisting departmental attorney (e.g. coordinating the process for notifying educators and school districts of disciplinary actions in accordance with Ohio Revised Code pro-visions, indexing and scanning documents in accordance with public records law and assisting staff attorney with processing and responding to public records request)

  • Maintaining statutory confidentiality requirements

  • Drafting legal documents (e.g., rules and regulations, Letter of Admonishments, Consent Agreements, and Auto Revocations)

  • Preparing case summaries, legal documents, and reports for review, approval, and signature by, or use of a licensed attorney

  • Monitoring consent agreements and disciplinary actions involving teachers

  • Searching files for inquiries or missing data to support reports, while creating, updating, and maintaining both hard copy and electronic files for office records

  • Utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Adobe Professional to produce or merge complex technical materials (e.g., documents requiring use of legal, statistical, or other terminology)

  • Proofreading documents for spelling, punctuation, syntax, and grammar while revising, modifying, merging correspondence, forms, and other confidential or sensitive materials

  • Reviewing leases and contracts on behalf of attorney by responding to general inquiries Disseminating information regarding the promulgation of administrative rules and scheduling hearings pursuant to Chapter 119 of the Ohio Revised Code.

  • Entering and maintaining data in the appropriate databases (e.g., case descriptions,  investigation notes, correspondence, contacts, hearing information, subpoenas, final actions, and status changes)

  • Preparing case files for closure and maintaining accurate log of all on-site and off-site files

  • Processing licensure applications as needed

  • Performing other related duties as assigned (e.g., scheduling administrative hearings, answering incoming phone calls, attending meetings, and assisting with maintenance of office files).

  • May require travel.
