Legal Assistant – Subrogation & Workers' Compensation Defense Assistant
Job Purpose:
Under general direction, perform a full range of complex and responsible legal assistant work utilizing legal terminology, procedures, and documents, including work related to litigation in the California Superior Courts (civil), US Federal District Courts (civil), and Workers’ Compensation Appeals Board.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Receive and transcribe legal dictation of status reports, conference summaries, settlement disbursement reports, etc.
- Prepare draft pleadings and discovery responses in accordance with the California Code of Civil Procedure
- Proofread and correct prepared materials for correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, format, syntax, and content.
- Compose routine letters and memoranda using knowledge of client-specific instructions and guidelines.
- Maintain files, logs, and other information in connection with the work under the control of the assigned attorney.
- Prepare Case Management Statements(subro), settlement documents, and Trial exhibits in advance of hearings and set depositions as applicable.
- Accurately document and bill for all billable work and tasks according to billing procedures.
- Operate standard office equipment such as copy machines, and scanners.
- Receive and place telephone calls.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Prior experience as a Legal Assistant in civil litigation is required.
- Worker's Compensation Defense experience is helpful.
- Familiarity with Superior Court Local Rules and statewide Superior Court websites.
- Familiarity with the California Code of Civil Procedure as it relates to civil litigation deadlines in discovery, law, and motion and trial preparation.
- Familiarity with vendors used for discovery, service of process, and court filings; State Court filing and/or e-filing procedures.
- Ability to review Superior Court website and/or local rules to support attorneys in compliance.
- Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Merus Case, Kofax PDF and One Drive.
- Skilled typing ability (minimum 75 WPM) as well as strong writing, proofreading, spelling, and grammar skills.
- Ability to interact effectively with the public, clients, and employees; maintain confidentiality and use discretion and tact; work independently in the absence of specific instruction.
- This is a 40-hour per week job.
The ideal candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, and work well under pressure with the ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously. Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and have pride in work product. This is a fast-paced position that requires critical thinking skills, and the ability to problem-solve. In addition, this role must work collaboratively with attorneys and staff at all levels to achieve goals.
