Summary

About the Opportunity
This position provides complex and comprehensive legal advice and representation to City officials and staff and to assist the City Attorney in managing and administering the activities and staff involved in providing legal representation to the City.


What you'll be doing:

  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff: plans, directs and reviews work of individuals and the team;
    processes employee concerns and problems and counsels as appropriate.
  • Organizes, prioritizes, assigns work, prioritizes and schedules work activities in order to meet objectives.
  • Serves as counsel in representing the legal interest of the City of Asheville; provides legal advice to City officials and staff as
    requested or assigned.
  • Drafts contracts and other agreements: reviews contracts for compliance with City policies and procedures, as well
    as local, state, and federal laws. Reviews a variety of contracts for various departments to ensure compliance with State procurement statutes, City policies and City Council approved resolutions.
  • May manage litigation for the City of Asheville: prepares and responds to interrogatories, requests for production of documents,
    requests for admissions and other discovery requests.
  • Attends meetings of various City boards and commissions and provides legal advice to Boards and Commissions, as assigned.
  • Maintains current knowledge of changes in state and federal legislation and case law as it applies to cities.

About you:

We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:
  • Juris Doctorate, with a minimum of five (5) years of municipal or related law experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Experience in litigation, advising public safety officials (fire, police), and employment law are preferred, but not required. 

Licensing and Certifications:

  • License to practice law in the State of North Carolina; membership in good standing with the North Carolina Bar.
  • Continuing Legal Education credits

Other things to know: 

Typical hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm, must be willing to work evenings and weekends as needed.
