- As an Assistant City Attorney in the Civil Department, you will play a vital role in shaping the City’s legal landscape. This position offers a unique opportunity to provide strategic legal counsel to City department, conduct in-depth legal research, and draft critical legal documents, including contracts and legal opinions. Working under the direction of the Chief Deputy City Attorney and the Director of Law, you’ll contribute to high-impact decisions that drive municipal governance. With a focus on civil law, you will collaborate with diverse teams and stakeholders, making a meaningful difference in the City’s legal affairs and ensuring the City's continued success.

- Provides legal counsel to designated departments and City boards
- Conducts research and drafts legal opinions, contracts, and other legal documents as assigned.
- Completion of work assignments may require the operation of a vehicle.

- Requirements of Work
- Knowledge of the principles and procedures of civil law, especially as they relate to municipal corporations, and ability to apply this knowledge to legal issues.
- Working knowledge of municipal laws and ordinances.
- Ability to analyze and draft legal documents and instruments.
- Ability to perform self-directed research and analysis as required.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, employees of other Departments, representatives of other organizations, and the public.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to analyze, appraise and organize facts, evidence, and precedents relevant to assigned cases and to prepare written opinions.
- Ability to attend off-site meetings as needed.
- Ability to work in an office environment using current office technology and equipment.
- An employee shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.
- May require ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license.

- Required Experience and Training
- Graduation from an accredited school of law.
- Admission to practice before the Supreme Court of the State of Kansas, or eligibility for admission by reciprocity.
- One year of professional legal experience in contract drafting and/or negotiation, municipal or administrative law, private practice involving contracts, or as a research assistant to a court or administrative body.

Preferred Experience and Training- One year of experience providing legal counsel to government departments, boards, or commissions
