Senior Counsel – Regulatory

Please Note: You will be required to be in the office at 241 Ralph McGill Blvd, Atlanta, GA a minimum of four (4) days per week and/or as additionally required. 

Relocation assistance may be provided if needed and if you qualify.  

JOB SUMMARY 

This position will serve as a senior-level attorney in the Company’s regulatory practice group and will be responsible for providing legal counsel and strategic guidance on a wide variety of matters. This position will work closely with the Company’s business units, members of senior leadership, and outside counsel to develop and implement the Company’s legal strategy related to key regulatory matters. 

JOB RESPONSBILITIES

  • Provide legal counsel on a wide variety of complex regulatory and external affairs matters.
  • Support key regulatory litigation and compliance efforts related to core aspects of the Company’s business, such as integrated resource planning, rate making, and other proceedings.
  • Develop and support the Company’s regulatory-litigation strategies and participate in all aspects of the regulatory-litigation process, including developing and responding to pleadings, drafting motions, briefs, and proposed orders, drafting written testimony, responding to discovery requests, supporting witness preparation, and drafting and negotiating settlement agreements.
  • Provide accurate and timely legal support focused on the needs of the business, ensuring compliance with applicable laws.
  • Establish and maintain constructive working relationships with internal business partners, outside counsel, and external stakeholders.
  • Oversee and collaborate with outside counsel representing the Company.
  • Assist with management of the legal department budget, including oversight and approval of outside counsel spend.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Graduate of an American Bar Association accredited law school with a J.D. degree and strong academic credentials. 
  • Licensed to practice law in one or more states in which the company or its subsidiaries operate. 
  • At least 6 years of experience, including law firm experience, practicing in complex business and/or regulatory litigation.
  • Examples of relevant experience include developing litigation strategies in complex cases, developing and responding to pleadings, drafting and responding to motions and legal briefs, developing and responding to discovery, working extensively with witnesses in preparing for hearings, appearing before courts or regulatory bodies, conducting direct and cross examination of witnesses, and negotiating settlement agreements with opposing counsel.         
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex matters with competing deadlines. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. 
  • Strong focus on inclusion, innovative thinking, practical solutions, and providing excellent client service.
  • Knowledge of relevant utility statutes and rules and regulations is a plus but not required. 
  • High ethical standards and behaviors.
  • Ability to engage frequently with senior company leadership.
  • Extensive analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to translate complex legal concepts into easily understood and concise messaging. 
  • Able to work autonomously and in a team environment as appropriate. 
  • Occasional travel is required. (Perhaps up to 25%)
