Job Description

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Reports to the Vice President and General Counsel

POSITION SUMMARY: A paraprofessional, qualified through education, training and work experience, who assists the Vice President and General Counsel by handling, under the supervision of a licensed attorney, various routine, high-volume legal matters including, but not limited to small or routine contracts, litigation oversight and discovery, real estate transactions, government compliance filings, legal research and other time-intensive paralegal tasks.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist with various transactional matters including, but not limited to drafting and reviewing contracts and other legal documents or instruments
    • Manage contract review process, including tracking all contracts and keeping University clients apprised of contract review status
    • Assist with the initial review of incoming contracts
    • Draft basic correspondence pertaining to contracts
    • Maintain collection of sample contracts and sample contract provisions
  • Assist with all aspect of litigation
    • Organize, manage and maintain litigation case files and case-related documents, including calendaring of filing dates and deadlines
    • Implement and manage litigation holds and manage related inquiries
    • Investigate and gather relevant information pertaining to litigation
    • Act as liaison among various internal departments and external counsel
    • Initiate and respond to legal discovery, including coordinating depositions
    • Gather information and respond to subpoenas
    • Compile and maintain reports and databases for pending matters
  • Perform legal research
    • Research laws, court opinions, governmental regulations and legal requirements
    • Draft summaries of research
  • Assist with drafting and revising University policies and procedures
    • Collect information about policies and procedures from other universities
    • Establish and maintain records of file/document retention schedules
  • Assist with educational programs
    • Assist with planning for educational programs
    • Research program content and collect information
    • Create and maintain database to track all educational programs
  • Provide office administration and support
    • Assist the General Counsel with administrative aspects of the office
    • Track and submit outside counsel invoices

QUALIFICATIONS: A Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-approved paralegal program, excellent academic credentials, exemplary personal and professional integrity, and a strong belief in the educational values and goals of Moravian University. A minimum of three years of experience as a paralegal in a variety of legal areas, with a strong preference for litigation or transactional experience. The position requires excellent organizational, communication (written and oral) and research (electronic and paper-based) skills, attention to detail, initiative, and judgment.
