Job Description

Assists with litigation and lawsuit case planning, contract reviews, legal research, gathers facts and retrieves information, reviews, revises, drafts and analyzes legal documents, manages the contract database, prepares business license applications, prepares governance documents, collects, complies and utilizes technical information, to make recommendations to General Counsel, responsible for General Counsel’s calendar and reminders.

This position will work at our Merced Administration Site.

Schedule is Monday – Friday, 8:00am – 5:00pm.

Compensation: $78,000.00 - $88,000.00 Annual Salary

Essential Duties and Responsibilities    

  • Conducts initial review of contracts and agreements, edits to ensure compliance with organization requirements; files and store finalized versions. Responsible for contract management system.
  • Drafts legal documents, formal discovery requests and responses, notices, interrogatories, and other legal documents.
  • Assists with locating and contacting witnesses, arranges for the interview and evaluation of witnesses, and assists in scheduling pre-deposition meetings with counsel and depositions.
  • Prepares preservation of evidence memos and other litigation support needs.
  • Prepares business license applications and tracks deadlines and compliance.
  • Assists in corporate governance documents, filings, and recordings.
  • May compile and organize trial notebooks, exhibits and files and coordinate the scheduling of witnesses, assists attorneys with witness issues and exhibits.
  • Drafts formal discovery responses, including special interrogatories, requests for admissions, production demands, deposition notices, and retrieves relevant documents.
  • Notarizes legal documents.
  • May analyze records and files and make recommendations to the attorney as to the disposition of files.
  • Performs legal research including statutory and case law and drafts forms, research memorandums, docket searches, and other legal research.
  • May prepare summaries of depositions and court transcripts and witness testimony.
  • In coordination with Legal/Risk Management administrative assistant, maintenance of General Counsel’s calendar and reminder notifications.
  • Oversees and manages Legal Services Administrative Assistant
  • May perform a number of other similar or related duties which may not be specifically included within this position description, but which are consistent with the general level of the job and the responsibilities described.

Physical Demands

  • Lift up to 25 pounds occasionally and push up to 50 pounds (on wheels) on rare occasions.
  • Make fine visual distinctions upon proofreading written documents and viewing information on a computer screen.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively in person and in writing.
  • Digital dexterity to assemble, retrieve and replace files.
  • Communicate by telephone.
  • Endure prolonged periods of sitting.
  • Speak clearly and articulate messages.

Work Environment        

The physical environment requires the employee to work indoors, primarily in an office setting.  The noise level inside is quiet to average.  Use of general office equipment is required on a daily basis.  Travel may be required at times.

Education/Experience Requirements    

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Basic principles, concepts and methodology of legal proceedings and legal research.
  • Knowledge of attorney client relationships applicable to the performance of major duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Principles of legal writing.
  • Problem identification, analysis and evaluation.
  • Principles of effective writing and verbal presentation.
  • Computerized information and database record keeping systems.
  • Computer information systems, including personal computer applications, work processing and spreadsheets.
  • Knowledge of computerized legal research system(s).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exercise effective judgment, sensitivity, and creativity to changing needs and situations.
  • Valid California driver’s license, vehicle insurance, acceptable driving record and reliable transportation.

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Bachelor degree, or equivalent work experience in a field that develops the skills required for the functions and responsibilities of the position.
  • Completion of an approved paralegal program.
  • Maintenance of California paralegal’s licenses, including continuing education requirements.
  • Minimum three (3) years experience as a paralegal, with transactional experience preferred.
  • Current possession of, or ability to attain active notary public license within six (6) months of hire in the position and maintain notary license.
