Duties
Serves as a Central Processing Pharmacist for Federal Bureau of Prisons' Central Processing operation which has functional responsibility for central processing services nation-wide to all designated BOP institutions as determined by the Central Processing Chief Pharmacist. Responsible for functional and operational aspects of Central Processing Pharmacy duties to include the delivery of pharmaceutical care services in accordance with the Bureau of Prisons treatment guidelines, national formulary, national policy, established standards of practice, federal law, and scopes of practice consistent with licensure. Ensures that all medication orders are reviewed for appropriateness in regard to medication, dose, route, interval, and contraindications, as well as evaluated for efficiency and appropriateness of therapy and formulary compliance. Responsible for participating in quality assurance activities regarding medications as directed by the Central Processing Chief Pharmacist. Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and is performed on a regular and recurring basis.

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements: Basic Requirements: Education: A doctoral degree in Pharmacy that is recognized by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree, Ph.D., Phar.D. OR equivalent doctoral degree. AND Licensure: Applicants also must be licensed to practice pharmacy in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. NOTE: ALL applicants MUST upload proof of current, active and unrestricted license for verification at the time you apply. AND Experience: Applicant’s qualifications background must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies necessary to perform the work of the position. Pharmacy work requires knowledge of the use, clinical effects, and composition of medications, including their chemical, biological, and physical properties. Qualifying professional pharmacy experience may involve, but is not limited to: Dispensing medications prescribed by physicians and other health practitioners and providing information to health practitioners and patients about proper usage of medications and side effects; Evaluating medication use patterns and outcomes for patients in hospitals or managed care organizations; Performing administrative, consultative, or staff advisory work for a medical facility’s pharmacy program; Planning, monitoring and evaluating medication programs or regimens; Establishing medication-handling procedures for the storage and preservation of medications; Researching medical literature and/or clinical medication information to provide accurate responses to inquiries; and/or Maintaining all medication records required by law. AND Medical Requirement: Must be able to distinguish basic colors. All qualified referred candidates will undergo a credentialing process prior to employment with the Bureau of Prisons. Experience: You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in federal service. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to successfully perform the duties of the position, and must typically be in or related to the position to be filled. Some examples of this qualifying experience are: Experience in the operation of a medication delivery system, assuring that the integrity of all medications are maintained and are properly stored. Experience in pharmacy protocols; recording of all information in patient's medical record using BEMR and BEMR Rx. Experience in maintaining a daily inventory of all controlled substances issued. Experience in dispensing pharmaceuticals in accordance with proper procedures including determining interactions with drugs, foods and diseases; therapeutic duplications and appropriateness; over/under use; allergies and appropriate doses. If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience.
