The Director of Policy and Public Affairs provides strategic leadership and professional work for the District Attorney in the areas of government & legislative affairs, policy development, public outreach and public affairs, strategic planning, legislative strategy, education & training, and community outreach for the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office on behalf of and at the direction of the District Attorney.

- Advises, supports and assists the District Attorney with legislative and government affairs priorities and leads the Legislative and Government Affairs operations for the District Attorney’s Office.
- Advances the District Attorney’s policy priorities before the Colorado State Legislature, the Adams County Board of Commissioners, the Broomfield City Council, other municipal city councils, the United States Government and other governing and political bodies throughout the 17th Judicial District
- Serves as the District Attorney’s coordinator and chief strategist on municipal, county, state, and federal policy initiatives
- Serves as liaison to the Colorado State Legislature, Colorado State Government, Boards of County Commissioners, City Councils, the United States Congress and the United States Government on behalf of the District Attorney
- Builds and maintains strong relationships with elected officials, legislative staff, and government agencies
- Tracks bills and advises the District Attorney on pending legislation and assists District Attorney with legislative and policy goals
- Drafts and reviews legislative proposals, policy letters and advocacy materials
- Monitors and analyzes federal, state and local legislation and regulations that impact the DA’s Office mission, operations and stakeholders
- Coordinates legislatives briefings, advocacy days, and stakeholder events to promote DA Office priorities
- Leads the advocacy for and implementation of the District Attorney’s policy agenda and legislative priorities
- Assists and advises the District Attorney, members of the DA Executive Leadership Team, and DA Office professional staff on major initiatives, such as the launching and funding of a Family Justice Center, and leads projects, programs and other initiatives for the District Attorney’s Office as assigned
- Provides strategic policy recommendations to the District Attorney and DA Office leadership, including drafting of position and policy statements, testimony and issue briefs
- Confers with the District Attorney and Assistant District Attorneys regarding the development, implementation and evaluation of programs, policies, procedures, goals and objectives.
- Assists with the identification of and application for grants and other funding sources to advance the mission and priorities of the District Attorney’s Office. May assist with the administration of grants and other funding sources, as assigned.
- Assists the District Attorney with work on the 17th Judicial District Criminal Justice Coordinating Council and its related projects and initiatives
- Leads and directs the Public Affairs and Community Outreach programs of the District Attorney and the District Attorney’s Office
- Engages, creates, and nurtures partnerships with community organizations, school districts, non-profits, faith-based organizations and community stakeholders on behalf of the District Attorney
- Creates and implements a strategic plan for the District Attorney’s outreach to the community and community organizations
- Plans, leads, and coordinates DA Office programming in the community, including organizing and staffing DA Office booths at community fairs and other public events
- Coordinates with relevant DA staff on the planning and execution of internal and external projects and special events for the District Attorney’s Office
- Leverages and coordinates the internal skills, connections, and interests of District Attorney Office employees to improve and build up external partnerships.
- Serves on boards, specialty teams and task forces on behalf of the District Attorney, as assigned.
- Advises the District Attorney on communications, public relations and media related goals and objectives
- Assists in the development, writing and production of DA Office literature and pamphlets for distribution at public events
- Collaborates across DA Office units and departments to ensure policy, communications and program strategies are aligned
- Collaborates with senior District Attorney leadership team on DA Office external and internal strategic initiatives and programs
- Participates in the planning and execution of DA Office leadership development, mentorship and training programs
- Assists other DA senior executive leaders with projects and duties, as assigned.

- Qualifications for Success
To be successful, our ideal candidate should have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
Knowledge of:
- The duties, powers, limitations and authorities of the District Attorney's Office and related law enforcement or criminal justice agencies.
- The Colorado State Legislature, Colorado State Government, the Colorado Governor’s Office, the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, the United States Congress, the Adams County Board of Commissioners, Adams County Government, the Broomfield City Council, city councils throughout the 17th Judicial District and local government leaders and agencies
- Leadership practices including staff development, administration, organization, and training.
Ability to:
- Represent the District Attorney with professionalism and integrity
- Build, nurture and maintain relationships with elected officials, community leaders and relevant stakeholders
- Establish and maintain positive, supportive and effective working relationships internally and externally.
Skills in:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, presentation skills, negotiation skills, and the ability to communicate complex ideas orally and in writing
QUALIFICATIONS FOR SUCCESS:- Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, public policy, public administration, political science, public health, or related field. (Masters Degree or Juris Doctor preferred.) Relevant and related work experience may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement.
- Three to five years minimum experience in policy, law, legislative affairs or government relations
- Proven success in government and legislative affairs, policy advocacy, and community outreach
- Demonstrated leadership and project management experience
