AGENCY DESCRIPTION: Indiana Legal Services, Inc. (ILS) is a statewide, not-for profit law firm that provides free legal services to eligible clients in civil cases through 8 branch offices. ILS is funded by the Legal Services Corporation, Indiana Civil Legal Aid Fund, United Ways, Area Agencies on Aging, and approximately 80 other funding sources.

LOCATION: Legal internship opportunities are available across all of ILS’s eight offices: Bloomington, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Lafayette, Merrillville, New Albany, and South Bend. ILS has several projects that address the needs of particular client communities, including the Senior Law Project, Immigrants’ and Language Rights Center, the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic, Medical-Legal Partnerships, the Military Assistance Project, the Legal Assistance for Victimized Adults (LAVA) Project, and the Workers’ Rights and Protection Project (WRAPP). In addition to onsite internships, remote or a combination of remote and in-office work opportunities with some occasional travel to ILS offices may be available.
 
COMPENSATION: $5400 for a 300-hour commitment. Interns will be paid at a rate of $18.00 per hour on a bi-weekly basis. Interns have flexibility in maintaining a work schedule to meet their 300-hour commitment during the 10-week internship.
 
JOB SUMMARY: This is a full-time internship working 300 hours over a 10-week period. The internship offers an opportunity for law students who are committed to poverty law and equal access to justice. Interns will work as part of a law firm that encourages all staff members and volunteers to use the law to fight poverty and racism, empower clients, and improve access to justice. Interns will handle a wide range of assignments and will have opportunities for direct client contact, attending court and administrative proceedings, and strategizing with ILS attorneys on their individual cases. Interns located in our regional offices will likely have a chance to work in numerous substantive areas including but not limited to housing, family law, consumer finance, and public benefits.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Research and writing
  • Client interaction (meetings and phone calls)
  • Drafting pleadings and correspondence
  • Hearing preparation and attendance
  • Investigation and development of facts in individual cases
  • Strategizing with ILS attorneys on individual cases
  • Attending meetings, trainings, and education sessions
 
QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Dedication to the mission of Indiana Legal Services.
  • Enrollment in law school or recent graduation from law school.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work as a team member and collaborate with others.
  • Ability to comply with ILS policies and procedures and competently perform all job duties.
  • Trial practice, professional ethics course completion, and certified legal intern status are qualifications that may be helpful to your internship experience at ILS, but are not required for consideration.

ILS Project and Office List
 
Statewide Projects: 
 
Low Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) – goal is to represent, educate, and advocate on behalf of Hoosier taxpayers to ensure that all Indiana residents are able to know, understand, and exercise their fundamental rights as taxpayers.
 
Immigrants’ and Language Rights Center (ILRC) – to reach vulnerable and underserved immigrant and limited English proficient populations within Indiana. These populations have particular difficulties accessing legal services because of their language and cultural barriers. They may also have legal issues that are different than other legal service clients. ILRC works to reduce these barriers to services by employing different means to reach these groups and provide them with quality legal services. 
 
Military Assistance Project (MAP) – assists income-eligible veteran who need legal advice or representation. Free of charge, we offer assistance for: Adult guardianship; advance directive/simple wills; access/correct military records; child support, custody, visitation modification; divorces limited circumstances; driver’s license restoration; veteran eviction avoidance; criminal record expungement; military discharge upgrades; public benefits, food stamps, SSI, unemployment, poor relief, TANF; VA overpayments; and incarcerated veteran re-entry.
 
Legal Assistance for Victimized Adults (LAVA) Project – LAVA provides legal representation to Indiana seniors and endangered adults who have suffered abuse, neglect or exploitation, including criminal financial exploitation. Our purpose is to ease or eliminate the negative effects of these crimes
by providing free civil legal services. Additionally, LAVA provides law-related education and proactive programs designed to empower seniors and endangered adults. 
 
Worker’s Rights and Protection Project (WRAPP) – WRAPP is a statewide program that provides know-your-rights education to vulnerable communities, including immigrants and migrant farmworkers, and provides advice, brief services and/or direct representation to clients on matters related to their employment or exploitation. 
 
Senior Law Project (SLP) – SLP is a statewide program that provides legal representation to persons 60 and over and any residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Legal services provided by the project include estate planning, public benefits, housing, consumer, and family law.  
 
Medical-Legal Partnerships (MLP) – ILS’s MLPs provide civil legal services to the patients of health care providers and focus on legal issues related to social and environmental factors known to have a negative effect on health outcomes. The MLPs use legal remedies to eliminate or reduce the negative impact of these factors.
