SALARY GRADE:  Flat Rated

The Johnston County District Attorney’s Office is seeking a dedicated and skilled investigator to join our team in the pursuit of justice. This role offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative and supportive environment under the leadership of an elected District Attorney with more than 30 years of experience in prosecution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive investigations to support the prosecution of criminal cases.
  • Review and analyze jail phone calls, law enforcement investigative files, and other items of evidence.
  • Draft and execute search warrants, including those for digital evidence.
  • Utilize people search software, such as CLEAR and other investigative databases, to locate witnesses and gather crucial information.
  • Collaborate with prosecutors and local law enforcement to complete additional investigations as needed.
  • Serve as the liaison between the District Attorney’s Office and local and state law enforcement agencies within Johnston County.
  • Develop and facilitate yearly training sessions for local law enforcement officers to enhance investigative practices and courtroom preparedness.
  • Testify before the Grand Jury, in court hearings, and in jury trials as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Knowledge of:  evidence collection, investigative techniques, and procedures; elements of criminal law; processes and procedures of the judicial system; basic human psychology; and social, cultural, and economic fabric of the community.

Skills in:  observation; analysis; information gathering; fact finding; interviewing; and report writing.

Ability to:  make pertinent observations and to analyze those observations against the charges in a specific case or situation; effectively communicate with people of diverse backgrounds; establish effective working relationships with law enforcement agencies; write detailed, clear, and concise reports; coordinate and share information; and work as a team member.

Must possess a valid NC driver's license and reliable transportation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Graduation from a four year college or university, preferably in the field of law, criminal justice, and psychology or sociology, with one (1) year of experience in legal, judicial, law enforcement, or investigative work.  An associate degree with three (3) years of experience in the above-mentioned fields may substitute for the four year degree requirement.  Other combinations of education and experience that provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered.

Management Prefers:

  • Active North Carolina Law Enforcement Certification is strongly preferred.
  • Technologically savvy, with demonstrated experience in handling digital evidence and using investigative databases.
  • Proficiency in drafting search warrants, particularly for digital evidence.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to prepare clear, detailed, and accurate reports.
  • Experience working collaboratively with law enforcement and legal professionals.
