About the Civil Services Division
The Civil Services Division of the Maricopa County Attorney's Office serves as a law firm that provides legal representation and advice to the Maricopa County government, including its elected officials, departments, and employees. Our work involves defending legal actions, lawsuits, and claims brought against County entities, including Section 1983, tort, election, and tax litigation. We also provide legal advice to County officials on various public law topics. Additionally, we process public records requests for the Maricopa County Attorney. Our division has four practice groups: Litigation; Government Advice & Elected Officials; Human Resources, Behavioral Health, & Probate Group; and Appeals, Election Law, Public Records, & Tax.

We Require
Two years of experience in a legal setting and knowledge of legal documents and proceedings
High school diploma or GED
Post-secondary education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis
Other Requirements
Valid Arizona driver’s license upon hire
The Maricopa County Attorney's Office requires a thorough background check of all successful candidates and is authorized to test prospective employees for the presence of illegally accessed drugs. Testing is conducted once an offer has been extended and before placement

Certificate of completion from an accredited secretarial school or legal secretary training program
Work experience in a private law firm or prosecuting agency as a legal secretary
Job Contributions
Type and prepare pleadings, subpoenas, documents, correspondence, and/or briefs for court filing
Coordinate case files, file documents, and maintain calendars for attorneys
Review various types of pleadings and court Minute Entries to accurately track deadlines
Use case management software to maintain electronic case files, draft documents, track and calendar deadlines
Coordinate and schedule various types of appointments, such as depositions and meetings via video, telephone, or in-person
Photocopy and distribute correspondence, notebooks, motions, briefs, files, and other documents as needed
Data retrieval using iCIS, PACER, Prolaw, and other databases as needed
Hand-delivers and picks up documents on and off-site and distributes mail as needed
Working Conditions
Office setting in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
Requires long periods of sitting while completing computer activities
May be required to travel to and from various County locations for meetings and trainings, utilizing personal or County vehicles
Ability to move up to 20 pounds floor to waist and push/pull up to 20 pounds at a distance of up to 100 feet
After a successful six-month period after hire, employees are eligible to telework up to 16 hours per week with supervisor approval. The ability to telework depends on the employee’s position and business needs.
