The Legal Intern position is responsible for working closely with City Attorneys and other professionals to gain hands-on experience in a real-world municipal setting. Legal interns may be asked to perform a wide range of tasks, from researching case law and drafting documents to answering phones and scheduling appointments. May perform paralegal duties to support the day-to-day activities related to the department, which includes providing general counsel services, municipal court prosecution, contract negotiations, and litigation.  

Duties

  • Open, organize, archive, track and close matter files.
  • Manage resources necessary to carry out the legal projects assigned.
  • Interact with City departments to ensure accurate and comprehensive information is obtained in all discovery and project-related matters. 
  • Draft legal documents such as motions, briefs, complaints, or pleadings based on the attorney’s instructions.
  • Research applicable laws and legal precedents in order to provide legal support to attorneys working on cases.
  • Prepare briefs, motions, petitions, and other legal documents for the court.
  • Review and summarize case files to determine what additional action is needed by the attorneys.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Required:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited law school.
  • Ability to work the entire semester. 
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat and/or Bluebeam. 
  • Clear and effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional proofreading and formatting skills with superior knowledge of grammar, punctuation and spelling.
  • Ability to read and comprehend municipal charter documents, personnel policies, statutes and rules associated with city government.

Preferred:           

  • Knowledge of municipal government operations.

Attendance is an essential function of this position.  The City reserves the right to require an employee in this position to work overtime. This position provides services or performs duties for the benefit of the general public during emergency situations.  These may include services or duties different from those performed in the usual course and scope of your job.  In the event of an evacuation, the incumbent in this position may be required to remain to perform needed services.

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
