Position Specific Description
The successful candidate will be part of the Commercial Legal Group within NextEra Energy’s General Counsel Business Unit. He/she is expected to spend 100% of his/her time supporting NextEra Energy Marketing’s trading and origination business unit. The position involves a high level of responsibility and contact with company management, including drafting and negotiation of contracts for sophisticated commercial transactions, with a focus on wholesale fuels and power transactions, as well as complex structured financial transactions. The successful candidate will have some experience with structured physical and financial fuels and power deals, renewable transactions, and trading agreements (ISDAs, EEIs, NAESBs).
Applicants should have a strong academic background and 2 or more years of experience in a corporate legal department, law firm or financial institution.
Ideal Candidate Experience:
- Two or more years of experience as a commercial attorney at a top energy company, law firm or financial institution.
- Preference for candidates with energy transactional experience, ideal candidate will have experience with California energy and REC markets.
- Experience drafting and negotiating power and fuels (gas, oil and natural gas liquids) transactions.
- Reviewing, preparing and negotiating physical and financial commodity contracts as well as originated and structured fuels, power and renewable transactions.
- Experience drafting and negotiating ISDA, NAESB and EEI master agreements.
- Ability to respect and effectively communicate and interact with clients at all levels of the organization, including senior management, and become a trusted advisor with respect to all aspects of NextEra Energy Marketing’s businesses.
- Must exercise sound judgment; be able to work independently and efficiently under time pressures and deadlines in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail.
- Must work with a sense of professional pride, possess a strong work ethic, be proactive, enthusiastic and flexible, and have business and personal integrity.
- Exceptional communication (written and oral) and interpersonal skills, including negotiation skills.
- Excellent academic credentials.
Employees in this job perform a variety of routine legal assignments and projects of varying (basic to moderate) complexity and deliver timely and quality legal services to clients with close supervision.
• Conducts legal research, drafts legal documents and assists more experienced attorneys in transactions
• Provides legal advice to business units, and prepares resolutions and forms
• Works to ensure budget compliance and avoids the need for outside counsel
• Ensures disclosure of potentially material legal issues to senior leadership
