
Incumbent serves as Court Reporter for Magistrate Court, responsible for recording court proceedings and preparing and processing court documents.
DUTIES:
Attends and makes audio tape recordings and shorthand notes of court proceedings, including operating recording equipment, taking notes, labeling exhibits and recorded tapes. Periodically transcribes tapes for appeals as requested. Travels to jail daily to record proceedings.
Performs various clerical duties as assigned or as needed, including ordering office supplies as needed, entering data on computer, typing/copying/mailing/distributing various forms/documents, such as court orders, bond slips, probationary license and defensive driving forms, and correspondence.
Answers telephone and greets office visitors, providing information and assistance, taking messages or directing/transferring to appropriate individual or department as needed.
Maintains court and Judge's calendars on computer, collects and delivers case files to courtrooms daily, and prepares courtrooms.
Prepares and processes payroll, including typing, copying, and submitting claims/vouchers to Auditor as required.
Periodically performs duties of Court Reporters in other courts in their absence as assigned.
Performs related duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK:
High school diploma or GED.
Working knowledge of standard office policies, procedures, related legal requirements and terminology, and ability to apply such knowledge to a variety of interrelated processes, tasks and operations
Working knowledge of standard English grammar, spelling and punctuation, and ability to take shorthand and type with speed and accuracy, and properly operate a variety of standard office equipment, including computer, printer, telephone, copier, typewriter and recording equipment.
Working knowledge of standard bookkeeping practices and ability to perform arithmetical calculations.
Ability to work rapidly for long periods, work on several tasks at the same time, and complete assignments effectively amidst frequent distractions and interruptions.
Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with co-workers, other County departments, attorneys and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender, cultural diversities and disabilities.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and work alone and with others in a team environment with minimum supervision, often under time pressure.
Ability to occasionally work evening and/or extended hours.
Possession of a valid driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.
RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent performs standard, recurring duties according to well-established department policies and legal procedures, with priorities determined primarily by supervisor, court calendar and service needs of the public. Incumbent's work is periodically reviewed for adherence to instructions/ guidelines and legal requirements. Errors in incumbent's work are usually prevented through legally defined procedures and are detected through supervisory review.
Undetected errors may result in loss of time for correction and/or inconvenience to other departments, agencies and/or the public.
PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, attorneys and the public for the purpose of exchanging and explaining information.
Incumbent reports directly to Magistrate.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Incumbent performs duties in a standard office environment and in courtrooms involving sitting and/or operating a computer for long periods, hearing communication, reaching, handling/grasping/ fingering objects, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 25 pounds, and close vision. Incumbent occasionally works extended and/or evening hours.
