The Office of Information and Policy (OIP) is responsible for processing Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act (FOIA/PA) requests for the offices of the Attorney General, Deputy Attorney General, Associate Attorney General and other senior leadership offices oath Department of Justice.
Duties The duties and responsibilities for a GS-0306-Government Information Specialist-9/11 generally include, but are not limited to, the following:
Typical duties of the Government Information Specialist, may include:
* Research Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) regulations, policies, and procedures to respond to inquiries or answer routine questions related to FOIA processes.
* Make recommendations on standard policies and procedures to improve FOIA-related work processes.
* Interact with colleagues and supervisors to accomplish the work of the office.
* Prepare written correspondence according to established guides and manuals.
* Locates and evaluates materials for FOIA requests.
* Analyzes responsive records for disclosure under FOIA/PA statutes.
The duties listed above are generally written for one grade level. If the position is advertised at multiple grades, the duties will be adjusted in difficulty, complexity, and level of supervision, for higher or lower grades, as appropriate. Organization may also add other duties as assigned once you are hired, based on what is included and allowed by the position description.

To qualify for the position of Government Information Specialist, at GS-0306-9/11, you must meet the basic qualification requirements listed below.
If you are a current or former government employee on a permanent appointment in the competitive service, you will need to demonstrate 1-year (52-weeks) at the next lower grade level, to meet the time-in-grade requirements for this occupational series and grade. Additionally, please ensure to submit an applicable SF50 (please refer to the "required documents" section for additional information).
Specialized Experience:
For the GS-09: You must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-07 grade level or equivalent pay band in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as meets 3 of the 4 following statements: 1) Coordinates information requests and respond to inquiries; 2) Researches laws, regulations, and other directives to ensure accurate interpretation of Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act (FOIA/PA) requests; 3) Evaluates and analyzes data and information prior to responding to inquiries or requests for information; 4) Prepares written materials;
OR
Education - Completion of a Master's degree, or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree, or LL.B. or J.D. Graduate education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.
OR
Combination of Experience and Education - A combination of Education and Experience. A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position if the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the FIRST year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.
For the GS-11: You must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-09 grade level or equivalent pay band in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as meeting 3 of the 4 statements below: 1) Communicates and negotiates with requesters regarding FOIA/PA requests;2) Conducts record searches for responses to FOIA requests;3) Conducts research as required to determine FOIA/PA information to be released;4) Consults, as appropriate, with other government entities regarding responsiveness and releasability determinations;
OR
Education - A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; or three full years of a progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.M., if related, such as a degree in an intelligence related field of study.
