Performs a wide variety of moderately complex legal duties in support of the Appellate Unit as well as assisting with Colorado Open records Act (CORA) and Colorado Criminal Justice Records Act (CCJRA) requests.

Generally, the hiring range is $58,835-$73,544 annually. Qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position will be taken into consideration when determining hiring salary.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Thefollowingexamplesofessentialdutiesareintendedtobeillustrativeonlyandare not intended to be all inclusive.)

Provides preliminary and/or secondary review of all CCJRA (Colorado Criminal Justice Records Act) requests upon the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

Prepares and maintains files and status reports on all criminal and civil appeals cases; processes in coming and out going correspondence; prepares appeals documents to be filed in court; composes correspondence individually and under the direction of the Appeals unit.

Files pleadings and briefs through electronic filing system. Distributes decisions on criminal cases from the Court of Appeals and Supreme Court to Deputy District Attorneys.

Maintains current knowledge of Appeals, Extraditions, Sealing of Records Statutes, and Sex Offender Discontinue Registration statutes. Calculates and tracks deadlines related to Appeals cases.

Main point of contact for daily interactions with law enforcement agencies, in and out of state, on warrants for fugitives; provides follow-up on cases to determine if extradition is required; answers questions from the law enforcement agencies, District Attorneys, defense attorneys, probation, and defendants.

Compiles and prepares necessary documentation for various filings including, IADs, out of state witness petitions, Governor’s Warrants, and Habitual Offender investigations; completes paperwork in a timely and efficient manner.

Performs a variety of clerical duties in support of the Appeals unit as well other areas as needed.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree or Paralegal Certification preferred; High school diploma (or GED equivalent) required.
Five (5) years of clerical experience with at least three (3) year experience in a legal setting. Paralegal experience preferred, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS

Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License upon hire, with complying insurance. Review of motor vehicle record is required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment. 
This position requires successful completion of a criminal background check including fingerprinting through a national database.

In the event of an emergency/disaster in or near the County, all County employees are expected to make every effort to be available to assist the County Manager, Elected/Appointed Officials and Department Directors to ensure the continued operation of any and all necessary County functions.  This may mean being available to perform additional duties and hours beyond what is normally required.  In the event that an exempt employee does work more than 40 hours a week in support of County operations during an emergency, such employee may receive overtime or other appropriate wage compensation in accordance with existing County policies or at the discretion of the County.
