Job Description

Position Information

Examination Schedule:

  • Written Exam: qualified candidates will be notified at least five days prior to the examination
Examination:
Written Exam (Weighted 100%): Will be conducted for the purpose of assessing the applicant's knowledge of investigative techniques, techniques of obtaining and classifying fingerprints: records, reports; photographic equipment, public relations and other related topics.

Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.

Minimum Qualifications/ Employment Standards:

Level I:
Completion of 60 semester units or 90 quarter units of college course work from an accredited college, including courses in Criminal Justice, Computer Technology, Photography or related sciences OR any equivalent combination of education and experience.   A maximum of one (1) year of training and/or experience in the field of forensics, evidence collection, latent fingerprint collection, law enforcement, computer technology or photography may substitute for one (1) year of college.

Level II:
One (1) year of experience equivalent to Investigative Technician I in the Kern County classification system. 

A valid California Class C driver's license is required at time of appointment.
 
***These positions require that incumbents be willing to traverse rough terrain and withstand adverse weather conditions; observe autopsies and evidence associated with violent crimes.

Additional Information

Admittance to the examination will require a valid government issued photograph identification. Applicants who are unable to present proper identification must make arrangements with the Human Resources Division prior to the test date.

A background check may be conducted for this classification.

Following an offer of employment, you may be required to submit to post offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense.

This examination will establish an eligible list from which immediate appointment(s) will be made at the Kern County District Attorney's Office. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed. Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.
