The City of Hampton seeks an experienced and proactive Assistant City Attorney II to provide high-level legal services to the City Council, departments, boards, and commissions. This position plays a key role in interpreting and applying legal standards, drafting legislation and contracts, representing the City in legal proceedings, and advising on a wide range of municipal legal matters. You'll be part of a dedicated legal team helping shape city policy, promote justice, and protect the interests of one of Virginia’s most dynamic communities. The purpose of the class is to assist the City Attorney in performing a wide range of professional legal services to all City departments, various boards and commissions, and City Council. The class works under administrative supervision developing and implementing programs within organizational policies and reporting major activities to executive-level administrators through conferences and reports.

Typical Task:
  • Conduct legal research and draft formal legal opinions.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate ordinances, resolutions, contracts, deeds, leases, and policies.
  • Prosecute municipal ordinance violations and represent the City in court or administrative hearings.
  • Provide legal advice on regulatory compliance and enforcement.
  • Represent the City and the City Attorney’s Office in meetings, community events, and with outside counsel.
  • Assist in managing litigation and respond to citizen concerns.

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Requires a Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of legal experience as a practicing attorney. 
  • Must be an active member in good standing in the Virginia State Bar.
  • Must be licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia. 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
  • Must successfully complete a background check related to this position prior to any offer of employment or promotion.

Additional Requirements

  • Requires effective communication with internal and external customers.
  • Requires work hours beyond the standard 40-hour work week. 
  • Requires some local travel. 
  • Requires continuing legal education. 
  • The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
