Incumbents in this class are responsible for all civil legal work, including case and document preparation and court presentation in the establishment and enforcement of family support orders in the name of the State and local Departments of Child Support Services.

The class of Attorney-Child Support Services encompasses five salary levels. These levels are assigned at the department head's discretion in accordance with budget provisions, workload, organization, and the individual attorney's expertise and skill, subject to the following basic experience requirements:

Level I – This is the entry and trainee level for attorneys with little or no previous legal experience. Incumbents are generally assigned a variety of less difficult assignments under close supervision.

Level II – This is the first working level. Attorneys at this level generally have at least one year in the practice of law. Incumbents work under close supervision, and perform work of average difficulty.

Level III – This is the full journey level. Assigned attorneys have at least one year of experience in the class of Attorney – Child Support Services, Level II, in Sacramento County Service, or three years of experience in the practice of law. Incumbents at this level are given increasingly difficult and complex assignments under general supervision.

Level IV - This is the advanced journey level. Attorneys at this level have at least one year of experience in the class of Attorney-Child Support Services, Level III, in Sacramento County Service, or four years of experience practicing law, with at least three of the four years in an area of child support law practiced by a local government or state agency. Incumbents are given difficult and complex assignments under minimum direction.

Level V - This is the lead and/or specialist level. Attorneys at this level have at least one year of experience in the class of Attorney-Child Support Services, Level IV, in Sacramento County service. Incumbents litigate demanding and critical cases requiring a highly advanced degree of knowledge of legal processes, or act in a lead capacity when the staff size is so large, or the work is so complex, as to require a first line supervisor and a lead attorney.
