About the Role: 

The Deputy General Counsel will play a pivotal role in shaping the legal strategy and governance at Independent Living Systems (ILS). ILS, along with its affiliated health plans known as Florida Community Care and Florida Complete Care, is committed to promoting a higher quality of life and maximizing independence for all vulnerable populations. This position is responsible for minimizing legal risks while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements, thereby safeguarding the organization's reputation and operational integrity. The Deputy General Counsel will provide expert legal analysis to support decision-making. Ultimately, the Deputy General Counsel will contribute to the overall mission of delivering high-quality health care services while maintaining the highest legal and ethical standards. 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in a legal role, with a focus on health care law and corporate governance.
  • Active bar membership in the relevant jurisdiction.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience in a senior legal position within the health care industry.
  • Demonstrated expertise in crisis management and public relations.
  • Advanced certifications in health care compliance or corporate governance.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage all legal matters, including litigation, compliance, and regulatory affairs.
  • Develop and implement legal strategies to minimize risks and protect the organization's interests.
  • Provide legal guidance to senior management and the board of directors on corporate governance issues.
  • Lead crisis management efforts and coordinate public relations strategies in response to legal challenges.
  • Conduct thorough legal analysis and research to support organizational decision-making.

Skills: 

The required skills of executive presence and leadership are essential for effectively communicating legal strategies to stakeholders and guiding the organization through complex legal landscapes. Litigation management skills will be utilized daily to oversee ongoing cases and ensure that legal representation aligns with the organization's objectives. Public relations skills will be critical in managing the organization's image during legal crises, ensuring that communication is clear and effective. Legal analysis skills will be employed to assess risks and provide actionable insights to senior management, facilitating informed decision-making. Additionally, expertise in corporate governance and regulatory affairs will be leveraged to ensure compliance with laws and regulations, thereby fostering a culture of integrity and accountability.
