Attorney Development Manager Job Details:
Snell & Wilmer LLP, one of the largest law firms in the Western United States, is seeking an Attorney Development Manager to support our attorneys’ professional development through training, mentoring, and connection-building. The position requires in-depth knowledge of the legal profession, strong listening skills, and good judgment. Moreover, we seek individuals who are creative, positive, and excited to engage with a diverse range of colleagues in a professional and thoughtful manner. This is a relationship-focused role that is grounded in best practices to support attorney learning, development, and engagement.
The individual selected will have a demonstrated track record of building relationships, promoting the growth and advancement of attorneys, and maintaining confidentiality. Work will be performed under the direction of the firmwide Attorney Development Committee (ADC) and the Director of Attorney Development, with additional guidance and support from the Chief Talent Officer. This position will be based in Phoenix, AZ. Other office locations may be considered, depending on business needs and whether the candidate otherwise meets the position qualifications.
The Attorney Development Manager role falls within the Attorney Talent team at the firm, which includes colleagues focusing on attorney recruiting, development, DE&I, and paraprofessional services. There will be frequent communication and collaboration with teammates across offices and job functions.
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to the following:
- Meeting with Associates in designated offices to assess their professional development and discuss any concerns. This includes providing coaching and career advice for Associates to help them attain professional goals
- Collaborating with ADC members to organize relationship-building, networking, and wellness-oriented events for Phoenix attorneys, and firmwide as requested
- Coordinating our firmwide attorney mentoring program, including serving as the administrative liaison to the ADC mentoring subcommittee, developing resources, and offering guidance to mentors and mentees
- Under the leadership of our Director of Attorney Development, coordinating firmwide training programs, including our new Associate orientation every Fall, annual Associate Legal Writing Program, and periodic trainings such as our Trial of the OK Corral litigation skills program and Midlevel Associate Academy
- Providing administrative support to the ADC (including keeping minutes of monthly meetings) and liaising with the DEI Committee, the Women’s Initiative Network, and firmwide affinity groups on attorney development-related initiatives
- Summarizing Associate input and providing feedback to the ADC regarding general trends and developmental needs
- Conducting attorney exit interviews and summarizing feedback for firm management
- In collaboration with our Attorney Recruiting and Integration Manager, organizing the orientation schedules for new attorneys joining the Firm
Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree; Juris Doctorate is strongly preferred, indicating a formal legal education and understanding of the profession
- In-depth Knowledge of the Legal Profession: A solid understanding of legal practices, professional development needs, and industry standards
- Law Firm Practice Experience (Preferred): Prior experience working in a law firm setting is preferred to ensure familiarity with legal practices, the business of law, and culture
- Coaching Certification (Preferred): While not required, a coaching certification would enhance the candidate’s ability to provide career advice and guidance
- Organizational and Administrative Skills: Demonstrates a strong degree of ownership and is capable of coordinating various programs and events effectively, including meetings and training sessions
- Collaboration and Communication Skills: Experience working with cross-functional teams and communicating effectively across different offices and with different attorney levels
- Occasional travel to other offices will be required
