Put your organizational and legal support skills to the test while working on some of the most high-profile legal defense cases handled by the City and County of Honolulu (City). The Department of the Corporation Counsel is seeking detail-oriented legal clerks to support its attorneys in representing the City.  As a key team member, you will

  • Take charge of proofreading, editing, and finalizing legal documents and memoranda,
  • Manage e-filing and calendaring of court deadlines,
  • Handle a variety of clerical and administrative duties essential to the success of each case; and
  • Perform other key assignments as related to the role.  

Level II (SR-12) $3,748 - $4,563/month: Responsible for independently performing moderately difficult legal clerical work in a law office, and for varying out the more difficult tasks under supervision and guidance on a progressively responsible basis. 

Level II (SR-14) $4,054 - $4,933/month: Responsible for independently performing the full range and variety of legal clerical work, including the more difficult assignments, in support of legal activities of an assigned section.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application, you must be a citizen, national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment. 

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school.  Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT:
Level II - Two (2) years of clerical work experience, one of which must have been legal clerical work involving the preparation, typing and processing of a variety of legal forms and documents which required knowledge of common legal terminology, procedures, practices, forms and documents.

Level III - Three (3) years of clerical experience, two of which must have been progressively responsible legal clerical work experience involving the preparation, typing and processing of a variety of legal forms and documents which required substantive knowledge of legal terminology, procedures, practices, forms and documents.

Substitutions:  

  • Business school or college-level credits from a regionally-accredited college or university will substitute for experience on a month-for-month basis for the required general clerical experience.
  • Relevant education and training from a regionally-accredited college or university in a legal office administration, legal assistance, legal secretary, paralegal, or law program may be used to substitute for the required clerical experience in a law office.  The amount of time credited for the substitution will be dependent on the specific program you completed.

Any substitution(s) must be met at the time of application. Education obtained outside of the United States must be comparable to a degree earned at a regionally-accredited college/university in the United States. In order to receive credit for the education, a foreign credential evaluation (FCE) must be provided. We also reserve the right to request further information about your academic program, evidence of comparability, or an original transcript.

Verification RequirementIn order to be given credit for your education, clearly list your education credentials on your application.  As part of the hiring process, you may be asked to furnish documentation to verify your education.  If available, please attach an electronic copy of your diploma and/or official transcript which shows the embossed seal or applicable FCE to your application. Or mail a photocopy of your documents to the following address: Department of Human Resources, 650 South King Street, 10th Floor, Honolulu, HI 96813.
