Position Title: Associate Attorney, Mid-Level
Reports To: Partner, National Counsel
The Litigation Attorney will be a member of the National Coordinating Counsel for complex mass tort and products liability litigation, including asbestos matters, providing strategic leadership and oversight across multi-jurisdictional portfolios nationwide. This role is responsible for coordinating defense strategy, managing nationwide discovery and motion practice, supervising local counsel, and serving as a primary strategic and client-facing advisor. The position requires advanced litigation skills, strong judgment, and the ability to manage high-volume, high-exposure matters while mentoring junior attorneys and support staff.
Responsibilities:
- Serve as a member of the National Coordinating Counsel for mass tort and products liability litigation, including asbestos cases, overseeing strategy and execution across multiple jurisdictions.
- Develop, implement, and maintain consistent national defense strategies, trial themes, discovery approaches, and motion practice across coordinated matters.
- Draft and review complex motions, pleadings, and legal memoranda in state and federal courts nationwide.
- Lead and coordinate written discovery strategy, including drafting master discovery, reviewing jurisdiction-specific responses, and managing discovery exchanged with multiple parties.
- Analyze and apply state and federal case law, statutes, and regulatory authority to develop effective pre-trial and trial strategies in coordinated litigation.
- Take and defend depositions of fact witnesses, expert witnesses, and corporate representatives; oversee deposition strategy and preparation across jurisdictions.
- Prepare, examine, and manage expert witnesses, including coordination of expert retention, disclosures, and testimony strategy.
- Argue motions and participate in hearings and court appearances as appropriate based on experience and jurisdictional requirements.
- Prepare national case evaluations, exposure analyses, and risk assessments for large litigation portfolios.
- Participate in mediations, settlement conferences, and court-mandated proceedings, including negotiating individual and portfolio-level resolutions.
- Supervise, direct, and coordinate the work of local counsel, junior attorneys, paralegals, and litigation support staff to ensure consistent quality and strategy.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for clients, providing regular reporting, strategic guidance, and clear communication regarding nationwide litigation status and risk.
- Provide substantive support and strategic collaboration with Shareholders, Partners, and Senior Counsel on complex, high-exposure matters.
- Mentor and develop junior attorneys within the practice group and contribute to internal training and knowledge sharing.
- Participate in business development, client presentations, and industry networking to support firm growth and national client relationships.
- Meet annual billable hour requirements and comply with firm timekeeping, ethical, and professional responsibility policies.
- Perform additional responsibilities as requested by management.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
- Active admission to practice law and in good standing in the State of Illinois; multiple state bar admissions strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 3 to 7 years of litigation experience in a law firm environment, with increasing responsibility for complex matters.
- Demonstrated experience managing billable work and meeting billable hour requirements.
- Substantive experience in mass tort and products liability litigation, including asbestos matters; experience serving in a national or coordinating counsel capacity is strongly preferred.
- Proven ability to manage multi-jurisdictional litigation and coordinate strategy among internal teams and external counsel.
- Strong client service orientation with experience advising clients on nationwide litigation strategy, exposure, and risk.
- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage deadlines, and perform effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume litigation environment.
- Demonstrated ability to lead and collaborate with attorneys, paralegals, local counsel, and support staff.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; experience with Filevine or other document management systems preferred.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills with exceptional attention to detail and strategic clarity.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure while exercising sound professional judgment.

The firm’s expected salary range for this position is $150,000-$200,000. Actual salary will be determined based on education, experience, internal equity and other job-related factors, consistent with applicable law. The firm offers benefits including comprehensive health, vision, and dental insurance, life and disability insurance, 401(k) retirement savings, and paid time off and holidays.
