The Neuromodulation Operating Unit offers solutions — from early interventional procedures to implantable surgical technologies — that treat chronic pain as well as pain from spinal fractures, cancer, and severe spasticity.

Reporting to the President of the Neuromodulation Operating Unit this individual will strike a balance between business and functional leadership and commercial success. This position requires a seasoned corporate generalist attorney adept at advising company management on the broad spectrum of legal and business issues affecting a global healthcare enterprise.
LEADERSHIP
Business Leadership. This position will participate on the Neuromodulation Leadership Team (NMLT), serving not only as a functional expert but also a strategic thought partner on all matters affecting the Neuromodulation business. The position requires a demonstrated ability to collaborate and partner with business leaders regarding business strategy and related legal issues. The candidate will demonstrate strong leadership and communication skills, building credibility and influencing decision-makers across all levels of the organization. They will effectively engage and collaborate with senior leaders and cross-functional teams, fostering trust and driving alignment on key business and legal priorities. Given the complexity of the Operating Unit portfolio, comprised of products at various stages of their lifecycle and each playing a critical role in the overall Neuromodulation strategy, creativity, flexibility, and openness to others’ ideas and solutions are a must for achieving success in this role. This requires open and productive collaboration with other Medtronic functions, including: Finance; Human Resources; Regulatory Affairs; Quality Assurance; Information Services; Internal Audit; Marketing; Sales; Communications; Logistics; Procurement; Business Development; and Mergers & Acquisitions. A successful candidate will have a keen ability to efficiently assess and effectively calibrate legal and business risk, including identifying issues and finding solutions while maintaining a focus on continuous improvement. Additionally, this individual will be responsible for setting and executing a proactive legal strategy that enables business performance and provides a competitive advantage. They will provide clear, actionable legal guidance and business recommendations, tailored for a diverse leadership audience, ensuring alignment with organizational objectives and fostering informed decision-making. Success in this role requires a strong sense of urgency and the ability to efficiently manage multiple priorities in alignment with the Medtronic Mindset and Mission. The ideal candidate will also demonstrate a solid understanding of the current dynamics impacting the Operating Unit (OU) and possess the insight needed to identify and enable the conditions necessary for achieving growth that outpaces the market.
Legal Functional Leadership. The position also serves as a people leader to the Neuromodulation Operating Unit Legal Team, a high functioning team of direct reports supporting the diverse range of therapies within the Neuromodulation business, including the brain, interventional, and pain management portfolios. A successful candidate will have strong people leader skills and a desire to coach, mentor, and drive accountability for results through others. Comprehensive team leadership capabilities include: leading by example; developing talent; communicating effectively; delegating tasks; being decisive; clarifying roles and responsibilities; communicating expectations; and managing time efficiently. The role also includes management of the legal budget to ensure continued support of business needs. Strong interaction and collaboration with other Legal Department team members, including Legal Centers of Expertise (COEs) and Regional Legal team members, as well as effective management of outside counsel is essential.
The candidate will oversee and manage legal disputes, litigation, and regulatory investigations, collaborating with external counsel as appropriate. They will partner with Intellectual Property, Compliance, Privacy, and other Centers of Expertise to safeguard and manage company assets. The role includes leading the drafting, review, and negotiation of complex contracts, including strategic transactions, collaboration agreements, licensing arrangements, and other high-level commercial partnerships. The VP role will provide legal support for mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, and other strategic transactions, including due diligence and term negotiation. Additionally, they will promote ethical practices and ensure adherence to compliance programs throughout the organization.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
This position will be located at the Medtronic Rice Creek facility in Minneapolis, MN. This position reports to the President of the Neuromodulation Operating Unit.
This leader will:
Manage and deliver legal advice and counsel to legal, business, function, and regional stakeholders;
Coordinate and manage outside counsel, ensuring high quality work product and effective cost management;
Engage appropriate stakeholders across the enterprise to drive consistency in approach as appropriate;
Lead stakeholders in the development and implementation of relevant training and knowledge management programs;
Manage partnerships with the COEs, Regions and other global stakeholders;
Implement continuous improvement of operating mechanisms;
Manage work allocation across the Neuromodulation legal team and the Medtronic Global Legal Department;
Guide, develop, and support junior Legal Department team members;
Build consensus and navigate cutting-edge legal issues;
Stay current on healthcare regulations, including FDA and other global regulatory requirements, and ensure legal advice reflects the latest industry standards and compliance needs; and
Participate as a member of the Neuromodulation Leadership Team, engaging with executive-level business leaders to discuss business strategy, legal, and compliance matters.
MUST HAVE: MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Juris Doctor from a nationally recognized U.S. law school or the equivalent from a foreign accredited law school;
Admitted to one or more U.S. state bars or if currently a foreign licensed/registered legal counsel, must have specific authorization from a U.S. state bar to provide in-house legal advice to Medtronic;
Be a member of the bar in the state in which the position is based or be eligible to waive into such state bar or otherwise be eligible to practice in such state (e.g., authorized in-house counsel program); and
13+ years of legal experience with a preference for at least 5 years of healthcare law experience.

The provided base salary range is used nationally in the United States (except in Puerto Rico). Base pay is based on numerous factors and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, etc.
