Job Description

This is an at-will and partisan position who leads the personal communication efforts for a portfolio of Republican members. The Communications Advisor provides strategic counsel and media coaching, while also drafting all correspondence with the media. The individual must be able to work closely with the media, legislators, staff, and coordinate with other members of the caucus communications department and other departments. The position requires in-person work Monday-Friday, with occasional remote work as directed by the Chief of Staff or Speaker of the House and will require work on some nights and weekends. Due to the nature of the position, a high level of confidentiality is required.

Duties

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

· Acts as a point of contact for media outlets interested in Republican members

· Works with legislators’ office staff to handle all media interview inquiries and press conference attendance for the members

· Provides counsel to the members with all public comments

· Provides initial drafts of all speeches, press releases, opinion editorials, and other public comments

· Monitors news coverage of the legislators and provides strategic advice on shaping coverage

· Provides counsel during media coaching sessions

· Assists with constituent correspondence, internal messages, or personal communication as needed

· Plans news conferences and other earned media opportunities

· Designs long-term messaging plans and calendars for the legislators to follow

· Performs other duties as assigned

Salary
  • $55,000 - $70,000/year
Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Bachelor’s degree preferred

· Experience in AP-style writing is preferred

· Three or more years of communications, legislative, or other relevant experience preferred

· Must possess strong research, writing, analysis, and oral presentation skills

· Must be comfortable functioning in a high-pressure and fast-paced environment

· Experience working with different personalities and a multitude of issues is required

· Must be able to learn House rules, policies, and guidelines

· Must be able to learn legislative districts and state political processes

· Familiarity handling a demanding schedule and organizing large amounts of information preferred

Benefits and Compensation:
  • This position is mid-level and will be a full-time salary (40 hours/week). Full-time salaried: $55,000 - $70,000 per year. In addition, the Michigan House of Representatives provides comprehensive benefits, with full-time salaried benefits which include but are not limited to:
  • Insurance — House employees receive medical, dental and vision insurance. The plans offered are some of the most comprehensive employer-sponsored plans in the area and are available at a low cost to employees.
  • Vacation Time — House employees receive 26 vacation days per year. With the exception of session days (typically around 100 days/year.)
  • Paid Holidays — House employees receive 12 paid holidays per year.
  • Employer-Matched 401(k) — Employees automatically receive a 4% 401(k) contribution from the House, plus the first 5% of employee contributions are matched. For example, an employee that opts to contribute 5% to their 401(k) will receive a 9% contribution from the House, subject to vesting requirements.
