- Position Description
The Holistic Division of the Harris County Public Defender’s Office (PDO) seeks an experienced, enthusiastic civil attorney to handle a docket of civil protective order cases and criminal record sealing cases.
The attorney will work within a team of civil attorneys and paralegals who assist PDO clients with civil legal needs arising from their involvement with the criminal justice system. Although this position will focus primarily on civil protective order cases with a secondary docket of record-sealing cases, the attorney may occasionally handle other civil legal matters for the division, including but not limited to asset forfeiture matters, administrative license revocations, and parole revocation hearings. Participation in community record-sealing clinics is encouraged. An ideal candidate would have some criminal defense experience to aid in collaboration with clients’ criminal trial attorneys.Duties and Responsibilities:
- Civil Protective order hearings.
- Evaluate cases and develop strategy.
- Meet with and advise clients, many of whom are in custody.
- Draft appropriate motions.
- Engage in negotiations with opposing counsel.
- Represent clients at hearings and trials.
- Collaborate with criminal trial attorneys.
- Represent clients on criminal record sealing cases.
- Screen criminal records for eligibility for expunction or nondisclosure.
- Review pleadings.
- Supervise paralegals who file and manage the cases.
- Represent clients in criminal and civil court on record-sealing matters.
- Negotiate with the District Attorney’s Office.
- Additional duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:
J.D. from an accredited law school.
Licensed to practice law in Texas.
Experience representing clients at protective order hearings.

Monday - Friday | 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Salary:
Starting at $93,100 per year
Depends on Qualifications
Based on 26 pay periods
Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
