About this Job


The Office of Mental Health Advocacy Service has a vacancy.  

Our mission is to ensure that our clients’ voices are heard and that they receive every right and remedy afforded to them under the law.

Our goal is to provide high-quality legal counsel and representation to our clients, address systemic issues that affect the rights of more than one client and require a remedy, act as a clearinghouse for information relative to adults and children with mental health diagnoses and children in need of care, and provide training to various individuals/agencies.

Applicants with experience working with juveniles and persons with mental illness and/or disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a current Louisiana license to practice law.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Advocates for and advises clients—including children and mental health patients—on their rights, legal options, the court process, and potential outcomes in a developmentally appropriate and culturally sensitive manner.

  • Determines and represents the child’s expressed preferences, and when a child cannot or will not express their wishes, identifies and advocates for the child’s best interests.

  • Conducts thorough, ongoing investigations, reviewing multidisciplinary records; interviewing key individuals; evaluating evidence; and participating in treatment, placement, administrative, and school-related meetings.

  • Attends and actively participates in all hearings, conferences, and proceedings, ensuring continuous, consistent legal representation for each child or client.

  • Collaborates with and advises hospital staff and community professionals on patient rights, legal responsibilities, and best practices, while providing training and guidance to support staff and junior attorneys.

  • Manages IV-E program responsibilities, including accurate data collection, documentation of client status changes, timely updates to staff, and quality review of all information prior to submission.


Position-Specific Details:
Appointment Type: This full-time vacancy will be filled by new hire or by promotion of a current permanent status classified employee.
Career Progression: This vacancy participates in a career progression group and may be filled from this recruitment as an Attorney 1, 2, or 3. 

Candidate must possess a valid driver's license. Travel is required.
