Supervising Attorney
Lawyers Preventing & Ending Homelessness Project
(Full-Time, Exempt Position)
Inner City Law Center is hiring talented, dynamic lawyers to help end homelessness in Los Angeles. We are a nonprofit poverty-law firm located in the Skid Row neighborhood of Los Angeles. Founded on the fundamental principle that every person should always be treated with dignity and respect, ICLC’s 75+ attorneys fight for housing justice for low-income tenants, working-poor families, people experiencing homelessness, people living with HIV/AIDS, people with disabilities, and homeless veterans.
Position Description: ICLC seeks a talented full-time Supervising Attorney that will work closely with clients and our partner organizations and will bring a whatever-it-takes approach to ending and preventing homelessness. Strategies include maximizing income through government benefits and increased employability; consumer law; limited immigration assistance; eviction defense; record expungement; citation defense; credit improvement; debt reduction; and preserving and obtaining housing subsidies.
Responsibilities: The Supervising Attorney’s primary responsibility is ensuring that ICLC clients receive excellent legal services. To do this, Supervising Attorneys:
Hiring Criteria: Commitment to ICLC’s mission and values. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong work ethic. Excellent negotiation skills. Organized, innovative, and solution oriented. Strong research, writing, and analytical skills. Ability to assume responsibility quickly and work independently and as part of a team. Ability to use good judgment, multitask, and meet short-notice deadlines. Ability to interact with a wide range of people in a kind, appropriate, client-centered manner. Membership in the California Bar is required—unless you are eligible to practice as a Registered Legal Aid Attorney under Rule 9.45 of the California Rules of Court. Three years legal experience required. Prior supervision of legal staff preferred. Must have a reliable form of transportation.
Compensation: We are seeking attorneys at all levels of experience. Salary ranges from $91,000 to $125,000 and is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits. ICLC has a hybrid work environment. This position will serve a nine-month probationary period.

Responsibilities: The Supervising Attorney’s primary responsibility is ensuring that ICLC clients receive excellent legal services. To do this, Supervising Attorneys:
- Help shape a newly funded project and manage a team of attorneys and paralegal(s).
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with funder, legal services partners, government agencies and community-based organizations.
- Oversee case acceptance criteria and a streamlined referral process to other providers so that clients experience a “no wrong door” approach.
- Provide holistic legal services to tackle barriers that our clients face and carry a caseload as appropriate.
- Supervise, mentor and guide attorneys, paralegals and other program staff with creative problem solving and litigation to address novel issues.
- Be comfortable guiding your team in addressing a wide-array of legal issues.
- Participate in community outreach events, including monthly in-person legal intake clinics, and develop relationships with service providers.
- Perform management roles, including organizing team work-flow and work schedules, assigning work, providing substantive supervision of legal work, managing aspects of grant funding, providing professional development opportunities for staff, and providing guidance and recommendations regarding hiring, promotion, evaluations, and significant discipline decisions.
- Perform work related to grant reporting and compliance.
- Partner with pro bono counsel to expand the volume of services ICLC can provide.
- Guide and train external entities and pro bono partners as needed.
- Contribute to conversations surrounding housing policy in Los Angeles County and participate in community groups and coalitions on issues impacting ICLC clients and client communities.
- Assist with projects and drafting policies and procedures related to legal issues.
- Adhere to all ethical responsibilities, including the Rules of Professional Conduct, which establish standards of legal ethics and professional responsibility for lawyers in California.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
