We are looking for someone to drive our billing and collection agendas and work hand-in-hand with the Sr. Director of Finance to achieve our 2025 goals.
The Director of Billing & Collection Services will be a key member of the firm's finance leadership team and will be responsible for providing strategic direction and day-to-day leadership to the billing and collections teams.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Drive the formulation, development, and implementation of billing and collection policies and practices; work with all concerned parties to enforce and assure compliance with established firm guidelines and procedures.
- Develop and implement standardized and efficient business processes that allow billing and collection functions to appropriately scale with firm growth.
- Direct the evaluation of client receivable balances, assessing risk to the firm and developing strategies around enhancing collections.
- Lead the delivery of exceptional client service to the firm's attorneys and its clients.
- Advance the utilization of technology and related tools to more effectively execute key functions, including successful implementation of the firm's practice management platform.
- Collaborate with the Senior Director of Finance, Chief Financial Officer and the Operations Committee to ensure timely and relevant financial and operational information is provided to firm leadership enabling informed decision making.
- Maintain direct responsibility for the efficient and effective operation for each of the respective teams (Billing, e-Billing and Collections), including the planning and directing of assignments, identification, and training on specific job responsibilities and completion of periodic performance reviews.
- Establish a culture that ensures staff communicates properly and promptly with firm personnel and external stakeholders at all times and that they exhibit a high level of customer service at all times.
QUALIFICATIONS
The Director of Billing & Collections Services should possess a minimum of ten years of professional experience, with at least five years in a finance leadership role within a professional services organization. Experience in the legal industry or other professional services is strongly desired. The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of accounting systems, with prior use of Elite and/or Aderant preferred, and demonstrate proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, particularly advanced Excel skills. A Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance is required.
In terms of personal characteristics, the Director must be able to maintain strict confidentiality regarding the firm's internal matters, personnel affairs, and client information, while thoroughly understanding the ethical responsibilities of the position, including rules related to confidentiality, billing, and client representation. The role demands the ability to build relationships and foster collaboration with internal clients across practice groups and with management. The candidate should proactively deliver high-quality work, anticipate problems, exercise independent judgment to make sound decisions, and know when to escalate issues appropriately. A proven track record of fostering continuous improvement is essential, alongside excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. The Director must be able to produce accurate materials within tight deadlines while managing multiple projects simultaneously and demonstrate a willingness to work a flexible schedule to meet the firm's expectations.
