Job Description

The Intellectual Property Senior Legal Counsel will support the legal group in collaborating with and providing strategic counseling to business partners, management and legal colleagues on a wide range of complex intellectual property (IP) matters including management of IP portfolios, development of licensing strategy, negotiation of related agreements. Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel, the Senior Counsel will also work closely with senior leaders and teams in the Innovation and Strategy areas of the organization.

Candidates should be highly motivated individuals with strong analytical and process-development skills, clear and strategic thinking, exceptional judgment, sense of accountability, integrity and a record of managing IP matters. They need to provide accurate, timely, and pragmatic advice through excellent oral and written communication skills. The candidate must be able to work in a collaborative and inclusive environment, with the ability to engage and motivate others through thought leadership. Candidates will support a number of teams, so they must possess strong time-management and organizational skills, responsiveness, and a demonstrated ability to balance multiple competing priorities.

Specific responsibilities for the position include:

  • Create and bring the strategy for IP rights protection that is in accordance with the institution’s business goals.
  • Applying expertise in commercial transactions and other intellectual property licensing, managing global patent and trademark portfolios, protecting information, and managing intellectual property enforcement actions while coordinating with outside counsel.
  • Understanding of the institution’s business, products, and technologies
  • Monitoring developments in policy, legal, and regulatory requirements in IP laws and regulations. Develop and implement IP policies and procedures to mitigate legal risks. Educate employees on IP policies, procedures, and best practice.
  • Engaging stakeholders and business operations staff in developing agreements that comply with Cincinnati Children’s policies and regulations (e.g. HIPAA, FDA, HSRP, export compliance, etc.) and apply those frameworks into contracting.
  • Negotiating, drafting, and processing various types of agreements with public and private entities, including various types of agreements with different sponsors (i.e., federal and state government, foundation, academic and industry).

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

  • Juris Doctor

  • 5+ years of experience with intellectual property law in a private law firm, government position, or as in-house counsel

  • Maintain licensure to practice law in the State of Ohio

  • Experience in intellectual property-related transactions and negotiations, and/or protecting and enforcing intellectual property rights including patents, trade secrets, data, software, trademarks, and copyrights
  • Experience with developing and managing intellectual property portfolios

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Molecular biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, or biomedical engineering experience
  • Admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office as a licensed patent attorney
  • Experience with international intellectual property issues and transactions, including managing global intellectual property portfolios
  • Prior experience with a non-profit healthcare organization
