Paralegal – Prosecuting Attorney’s Office

The Clay County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office is seeking a highly skilled Paralegal to support our legal team in the pursuit of public safety and justice. This role is essential to the litigation process, requiring a professional capable of drafting complex legal charging documents, managing critical case evidence, and serving as a key liaison between law enforcement, victims, and the court.

Key Responsibilities

  • Legal Documentation: Type and prepare charging documents (Complaints, Information, Indictments), legal motions, suggestions, pleadings, and subpoenas. Ensure terminology aligns with Missouri Approved Charges.
  • Case Management: Expertly navigate Karpel and Casenet to monitor warrants, probation violations, and court notifications.
  • Discovery & Redaction: Collate reports and evidence for trial preparation; redact documents in strict accordance with OSCA rules and regulations.
  • Financial & Restitution Management: Process money orders/checks within the Criminal Restitution system and manage weekly deposits.
  • Agency Liaison: Serve as a primary point of contact for local, State, and Federal law enforcement agencies regarding filed cases and evidence.
  • Administrative Support: Maintain complex filing systems, screen phone calls, assist visitors, and manage general scheduling for Assistant Prosecuting Attorneys.

What You Bring

  • Expertise: Deep knowledge of legal vocabulary, Circuit Court procedures, and the preparation of legal documents.
  • Technical Skill: Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Karpel, and Casenet. High typing speed and accuracy are required.
  • Communication: Ability to deal tactfully and professionally with victims or defendants who may be under significant stress.
  • Judgment: Excellent discretion regarding confidential case information and the ability to prioritize work in a high-pressure environment.

Qualifications

  • Education: High school diploma or GED with specialized coursework in general office practices or bookkeeping.
  • Experience: At least three (3) years of prior experience in law research and the preparation of legal documents.
  • Background: Must submit to and pass a pre-employment background check and drug screen.
  • Physical: Ability to lift up to 15 pounds and perform standard office tasks (sitting, kneeling, reaching).
