The Court Reporter is responsible for capturing a verbatim record of live court proceedings and providing real time updates to the judge. This position tracks and maintains exhibits and prepares accurate transcriptions of required proceedings for attorneys and/or court of appeals. Court reporter attends sessions of court, records examinations, testimonies, and judicial opinions, judge's charges to the jury, and judgments or sentence of court.
- Examples of Duties
Reads back portions of proceedings to the judge, jury, and/or attorneys; marks, secures, and files with the clerk's office all exhibits admitted in hearings.
Provides estimates to those who inquire about ordering records; provides records to those who order them; apprises all parties in a case when a record is ordered.
Contests pauper's affidavits when applicable and prepares for contest hearings.Preserves stenographic notes and computer files for future reference and for required length of time; backs up and secures all computer files at the end of each day.
Fills in and assists the court administrator as necessary; fills in as a court reporter for other courts when needed.
Regular and punctual attendance is required.
Performs other related duties as required.- Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED, completion of some college level course work and a minimum five years of experience in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and related experience required.
Certification as a Shorthand Reporter by the Supreme Court of Texas required.
Certification as a Merit Reporter and Real-time Reporter preferred.- Supplemental Information
