Position and Salary
The Attorney General’s Office is recruiting for a permanent full time Paralegal 3 in the Environmental Protection Division. This position is located in Seattle, Washington, and is represented by the Washington Federation of State Employees (WFSE).Paralegal 3 (Range 59) salary range: $67,992 - $91,464
The base pay offered will take into account internal equity and may vary depending on the preferred candidate’s job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.The following stipends may apply based on position requirements:
- Incumbents assigned to our Seattle office location receive an additional 5% King County Location Pay stipend.
- Incumbents assigned to a position designated as requiring dual language skills will receive a 5% Dual Language Requirement Pay stipend.
- Note: Effective July 1, 2025, Paralegal 3s assigned to work within King County receive Group C Assignment Pay in addition to their base pay. The Group C pay percentage received at this classification is a limited premium and applies at the Paralegal 2 classification.

About the Environmental Protection Division
The Attorney General’s Environmental Protection Division works to protect Washingtonians and our environment by bringing affirmative civil and criminal litigation targeting activities that place human health and the environment at risk. That work includes cases related to water and air quality, toxic chemicals, climate change, worker safety, public lands, fish and wildlife, and environmental justice. The Division brings both civil lawsuits and criminal prosecutions for serious violations of state environmental law.
The Environmental Protection Division consists of eighteen attorneys, two investigators, and nine professional staff. The Division works closely with the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division, and with the state Department of Ecology and Department of Fish and Wildlife.Duties and Essential Functions of a Paralegal 3
In support of the Mission and Values of the Attorney General's Office, the Environmental Protection Division, the primary purpose of this position is to supervise legal professional staff and to perform expert level legal support to EPD AAGs enforcing environmental laws in both criminal and civil actions..

This position would lead a team of paralegals assigned to a variety of criminal and civil matters and would include supervising, training, and coaching legal professional staff in the performance of all assignments, projects and job duties. The division will tap into your experience and training to ensure quality, timeliness, and continuous process improvements of litigation support services by monitoring workload of direct reports. You will act as a resource to division staff for questions and concerns regarding legal support services and assignments.

Combination of six years of experience* through:
- Paralegal certification
- Two-year paralegal degree
- Paralegal plus (or nine-month paralegal, post BA) certification,
and/or
- Paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney
OR
- Two years’ experience as a Paralegal 2 in Washington State Service.
*Examples of paraprofessional experience in support of an attorney:
- Preparing legal pleadings and legal correspondence
- Ensuring and verifying timely and proper service of legal documents
- Calculating, verifying, and calendaring critical events and other dates
- Managing case documents, files and exhibits
- Tracking and organizing discovery documents
- Researching legal issues and verifying legal citations and references for accuracy
Skills & Abilities
- Prior experience in high volume litigation environments preferred.
- Provides performance evaluation of staff and provides ongoing feedback.
- Experience in various state and federal courts or ability to apply court rules for the successful submission of legal filings.
- Skilled in use of databases designed to manage cases and document review.
- Experience in all phases of case management from pre-filing discovery through discovery and at trial.
- Management of matters with voluminous documents.
- Experienced in working with experts and tracking communication and contracts with experts.
- High level of familiarity and experience with all aspects of the discovery process.
Conditions of Employment
A background check consisting of employment history, professional references and educational verification (e.g., degree, license, or official transcript) may be conducted. Prior to any offer, the applicant selected will be required to submit to and pass a fingerprint-based criminal background check conducted by the Washington State Patrol, Criminal Records Division. The incumbent will submit to additional background checks as a condition of employment every five (5) years thereafter.
