Department Title: Undergrad Intern – International Legal / Global Public Policy

Location: The intern candidate must be able to commute into the New York City office on a daily basis.

Position Summary:

This internship spans two departments, and the intern is expected to help in both.

Global Public Policy, which focuses on our advocacy (‘lobbying’) on US and non-US legislation and regulation of our industry.  International Legal, which covers the Firm’s legal affairs outside the United States.

Franklin Templeton is one of the largest, oldest and mostly truly ‘global’ asset managers.  My legal team helps the Firm navigate our legal and regulatory responsibilities outside the USA, and the policy team advocates for legislation and regulation (and sometimes ‘de-regulation’) that we believe will help our clients and our firm as well as the global capital markets.  These teams are at the heart of the Firm’s mission.  The intern will have a great vantage point from which he can learn about the asset management industry, how it is regulated, and how legislation and regulation affects the way we conduct our business.  In particular, the intern will have an inside perspective on how a US-based global firm operates across borders.

The intern will also have the opportunity to meet and sometimes work with members of both teams and members of senior management, including those who oversee the Firm’s relationships with policymakers (on the policy side) and globally with banking and insurance clients and partners.  Thus the intern will have a first-hand look at such relationships.

Team Culture:

Franklin Templeton, while large and global, is family owned and emphasizes a collaborative, team-oriented culture. That provides for a pleasant workplace environment, a non-hierarchical atmosphere and a team-oriented approach to projects.

By definition, the Legal and Policy Teams work with a wide variety of other Franklin Templeton teams, including Finance and Distribution/Sales.

An International Legal/Global Public Policy intern can expect to learn:

  • How legal and regulatory considerations affect business decisions
  • How – and why- firms advocate for policies that can facilitate business success
  • How global firms must navigate sometimes overlapping or even conflicting cross-border legal and regulatory rules

Key Responsibilities Can Include:

  • Helping to track regulatory developments outside the USA
  • Helping to track legislative and regulatory developments in the USA
  • Helping to update internal clients on the above

Ideal Qualifications:

  • Interest in financial services
  • Good ‘people’ skills, including a true enjoyment of working as part of a team and across departments
  • Clear, concise writing skills
  • Interest in foreign affairs and cultures
  • Study of government, study abroad and study of international relations preferred, but not required.

There are several factors taken into consideration in making compensation decisions including but not limited to location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. At Franklin Templeton, we apply a total reward philosophy where all aspects of compensation and benefits are taken into consideration in determining compensation.
