SALARY GRADE: Flat Rated


***THIS IS AN ANTICIPATED VACANCY***

The Office of Indigent Defense Services (IDS) is seeking a reliable and professional individual to support daily operations and serve as the first point of contact for the Central Office in Durham.

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Answer and direct incoming phone calls in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Handle incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Notify attorneys, experts, and court clerks of approved fee awards.
  • eFile interim attorney fee applications in E-Courts.
  • Screen and process capital attorney fee applications and expert invoices.
  • Enter information into Access database with minimal errors.
  • Provide clerical and administrative support to IDS Director.

This position reports to the Office Manager.

Salary
  • $43,614 - $64,851/year
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Knowledge of: office practices and procedures; legal terminology; legal forms for orders and judgments, data entry and processing invoices received for payment.

Skills in: Outlook, MS Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat, excellent phone etiquette and verbal communication skills, operate computer, printer, and copiers.

Ability to: screen communications and, based on content, handle independently or route to proper destination; develop a general knowledge of the role and mission of the office and its relationship to other judicial offices; and provide basic information and instructions regarding programs and office procedures, learn and apply the IDS policies governing attorney and expert fee applications in potentially capital cases; be organized; and manage a high volume of documents.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma and three (3) years of relevant experience in an office environment involving record keeping, billing, and use of electronic data systems.

MANAGEMENT PREFERS:

High school diploma and three (3) years of relevant experience in an office environment involving record keeping, billing, and use of electronic data systems; or college program with major course work in public administration or criminal justice, or equivalency certificate and one (1) year of legal clerical experience.
