CHARLESTON VETERANS' MEDICAL LEGAL PARTNERSHIP ATTORNEY
Legal Aid of West Virginia (LAWV) is seeking a skilled, motivated Veterans Medical Legal Partnership Attorney to be based in our Charleston Office. As the Veterans Medical Legal Partnership Attorney, you will be working with the Huntington VA Hospital’s clinics in Huntington, South Charleston, and Lenore serving low-income veterans under the federal Legal Services for Veterans (LSV) grant. As a Medical Legal Partnership Attorney, you will be embedded into a health care provider to improve health outcomes of veterans by addressing health harming legal needs. LAWV currently runs another MLP with staff in our Charleston office and has expertise in this innovative and successful practice model.
The Veterans Medical Legal Partnership Attorney will be a member of a dynamic team with a project paralegal and will encounter opportunities for professional development and creative problem solving. You will regularly conduct outreach, hold on-site legal clinics and present training to medical and social services staff at the project’s three sites. You will work with veteran clients, representing them in court and in administrative forums, with support from and collaboration with other attorneys and community partners. Frequent travel to the project sites in southern West Virginia is required. While experience is helpful, Legal Aid values the dedication and commitment of new attorneys and offers an outstanding training regimen with in-office, program-wide, and multi-state training support.
The Charleston office serves 7 counties and is the largest office in our firm. This position offers a chance to work with a diverse group of advocates and veteran clients on a variety of legal issues. Outdoor enthusiasts will be delighted to learn that Charleston is just a stone’s throw from some of the state’s most beautiful landmarks, including the New River Gorge, Kanawha State Forest, and the Hatfield/McCoy Trail. Additionally, the nearby Elk, Kanawha and Coal Rivers offer wonderful kayaking opportunities. Lovers of the arts and culture can spend their days exploring the Clay Center for the Arts and Science and the Capitol Market, and their nights enjoying a great meal at one of our many local restaurants. Job Requirements:
1. Must have demonstrable commitment to understanding and addressing issues of low-income constituents.
2. Must have J.D. and be admitted to practice in West Virginia and in good standing or must be eligible for admission to the West Virginia Bar under West Virginia Supreme Court Rule 9 if admitted to practice in another state or must be eligible to take the next regularly scheduled West Virginia Bar Exam.
3. Must have skills to use office technologies, including learning LAWV case management software.
4. Must be able to balance administrative and client advocacy responsibilities.
