We are seeking a Paralegal who will be responsible for paralegal functions and support duties in the Office of Conflict Counsel (OCC). Who is the Allegheny County Office of Conflict Counsel?
The Office of Conflict Counsel is part of the Allegheny County Public Defender’s office, which provides legal counsel when a client needs representation and is unable to afford it. All OCC cases are heard in the Juvenile Section of Allegheny County Family Division, which addresses cases involving dependency, delinquency, termination of parental rights, and other similar matters.

What Will You Be Responsible For?
- Working closely with assigned staff attorneys.
- Entering case data into manual and computerized database systems.
- Completing case-related forms.
- Proofreading and correcting prepared materials for correct grammar, spelling, punctuation, format, syntax, and content.
- Assisting attorneys with review of discovery materials, including video and audio evidence.
- Performing a wide variety of filing tasks, including opening and closing files and obtaining and organizing materials in files.
- Answering phones and promptly delivering messages to attorneys and other staff.
- Maintaining the confidentiality of case information.
- Adhering to all policies and procedures of the Allegheny County Office of Conflict Counsel.
- Performing other related duties and clerical functions as required or requested.
What Background and Skills Does the Ideal Candidate Have?
- Ability to work in a confidential environment and meet time restrictions.
- Typing speed of 50 WPM minimum.
- Knowledge of relevant Pennsylvania laws, regulatory guidelines and county procedures.
- Willingness to problem solve and operate with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel.
- Capacity for clear communication with attorneys and other personnel.
- Competency to handle sensitive materials with discretion.
- Familiarity with standard office equipment.
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field preferred -OR- Any equivalent combination of education and experience that meets the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- High school diploma or its equivalent and an Associate's degree in Criminal Justice -OR- paralegal certificate.
- Act 33, 34 and FBI clearances are required.
Job Location
This is an onsite, office position based at the Allegheny County Office of Conflict Counsel in downtown Pittsburgh, PA.
Salary and Benefits
Salary is $ 39,140 per year.
This position is for full-time employment. As such, no other contracts for employment with Allegheny County to perform legal services will be permitted.
