As a member of the Community Initiatives Division, you will join an incredibly talented and passionate Immigration & Citizenship program dedicated to providing holistic immigration legal services to advance BakerRipley’s impact in the Houston region.
Reporting to the Director of Community Development & Engagement, and co-managing the program with the Sr. Manager of Immigration & Citizenship, the Managing Attorney is responsible for supervising legal staff, program management and strategy, and serving as the program’s legal expert on emerging immigration issues.
The Managing Attorney will work across all facets of the program including direct representation, legal workshops, advocacy, program management, and partnership building. The role involves supervision of immigration attorneys and DOJ Accredited Representatives, and places strong value on the mentorship and development of legal staff.
The Managing Attorney will co-manage the program alongside the Sr. Manager of Immigration & Citizenship. The role will be responsible for grant reporting, data management, day-to-day management of legal staff, and maintaining office policies and procedures. The role will involve program design and program strategy, especially during times when immigration policy is changing. The Managing Attorney will serve as the program’s legal expert and work with all team members on case law updates, review of new policies, and the creation of community talking points around immigration issues.
The Managing Attorney will also be expected to carry a small caseload of their own and provide legal consultations to community members. The Managing Attorney will serve as a legal expert and manager of quality control at large scale legal workshops and forums, and will be responsible for training pro bono attorney volunteers.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience managing legal representatives including legal interns, DOJ Accredited Representatives, and/or attorneys
- Experience litigating cases in immigration courts and/or immigration appellate work
- Expertise in humanitarian based relief such as asylum, crime victim visas, and temporary protected status
- Basic understanding of program evaluation and program design
- Experience in grant development and grant reporting
- Interest in developing innovative projects that address systemic issues faced by immigrant communities
- Commitment to community development and social justice
- Experience maintaining a high volume caseload
- Proficiency in a second language
- Experience working with vulnerable client populations
- Experience in community outreach, media, and/or public speaking
