SUMMARY: Notifies witnesses in criminal and civil trials set in the District Courts and County Courts at Law of the dates of their required appearances, answers their questions relating to serving as witnesses, and coordinates resolution of any problems relating to their appearances.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Contacts witnesses to inform them of court dates and scheduled appearances. This involves close coordination with the trial courts, prosecutors for the District Attorney’s Office, various law enforcement agencies, and the public.
Assists prosecutors from the District Attorney’s Office in preparation for trials by advising them of the availability of witnesses.
Gathers court-related materials needed to inform and advise witnesses of court appearances.
Files court-related materials and maintains files in a current manner.
Compiles time records on police officers appearing in court and issues them overtime slips.
Provides back up for the CCPD Witness Coordinator whenever that person is unavailable.
Surveys the District Courts, County Courts at Law, and Justices of the Peace Courts for their jury panel needs on a monthly basis.
Assists Information Technology and the District Clerk’s Office in pulling jurors’ names and printing juror summonses on a monthly basis.
Assists the Court Administrator’s Office with answering the telephone, answering questions from potential jurors and the public.
Maintains effective working relationships with judges and their court staffs, other county departments and their staffs, and the public.
Responsible for obtaining and posting the daily docket sheets for the District Courts and County Courts at Law located in the courthouse.
Responsible for retrieving materials faxed daily to the Court Administrator’s Office and the proper distribution of same.
Operates the postage machine, copy machine and fax machines for the Court Administrator, District Courts, County Courts at Law and other county departments.
Performs tasks assigned by the Court Administrator.
Assists the Court Coordinator as needed.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) plus three years of increasingly responsible secretarial and clerical experience; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Highly developed telephone skills. Ability to handle heavy telephone volume. Ability to successfully interact with employees in many Nueces County Departments.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Ability to work with diverse groups of people in an efficient and effective manner. Ability or demonstrated ability to learn the operation of computer and standard software. Bilingual preferred.
